      Viva Frida is about the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo as a young girl growing up being creative, inspired and passionate about her life. I love history books and picture books that can introduce young readers to real people or real events. The images in this book are all colorful illustrations done in the popular style that mimics princess picture books and whimsical stories, but with a Mexican-styled twist. This would draw readers in, and would engage kids in learning about a real artist. Also telling the story of when she was a young girl herself makes her more relatable to young audiences and allows new learners to connect with her instead of making it just a stuffy biography.

      I cannot begin to explain how much I love Yuyi Morales! This is one of her best pieces of work and I look forward to using it in my classroom. This book would be a wonderful aid in an art,cultural or history lesson!

      In a book designed to teach elementary vocabulary of the Spanish language, the author and illustrator pay tribute to Frida Kahlo, a Mexican painter. The book is bilingual, written in Spanish and English. The artist is depicted as a doll-like figurine throughout the book. It is bright and colorful.

      This is not the typical biographical picture book of Frida Kahlo. It's more of photographic picture book. Yuyi Morales made amazing 3-D sculptures that represented Frida artful life. This a must-see book! It has easy phrases that can easily be read to all children.

      This picture book biography allows the reader to understand the hardships of aritist Frida Kahlo. I enjoyed reading this book because I felt as though I was able to understand the motivations put into her paintings when reading this book. I would read this book to an art class in order to allow the readers to expand their knowledge on certain artists. This book is an excellent book because it teachers originality. This book teaches an aspiring artist to stay true to their originality. I would read this book to an art class between the ages of pre-k to second grade because young artistry is prevalent even this early.

      Summary: This book helps to teach the reader certain phrases in Spanish, but all of the illustrations depict Frida Kahlo who was a famous painter. All of the words and pictures depict how Frida actually felt, and her feelings are portrayed in the illustrations.Personal reflection: This book had great illustrations and the words in the book were words that are useful in everyday vocabulary. Another thing I enjoyed was at the end of the book the author writes a age about her feelings toward Frida. She also discusses some facts about Frida's life and her art.Class use: This could help students learn Spanish and teach them about the life and art of Frida Kahlo.

      It is a book with very little words, but what is written in English and Spanish is good. It does help tell the story of Frida kahlo and her struggle becoming a artist even after her death. The art is not a typical drawing but puppets, artwork and illustrations with wonderful array of colors just like the artist. Great book to supplement a biography or theme.

      Spanish and English book. Sparse text explores the life and inspirations of Frida Kahlo. The use of multimedia art is striking and impressive. A bright and entertaining read. Useful for cultural explorations and discussions about using multimedia art.

      I love the colorful handmade creation photographs in Viva Frida, Especially her Mexican peasant blouse and skirt. Another one of my favorite photographs is the marionette while the monkey sits on her shoulder. A paper cutout, shows Frida rescuing and injured fawn.The book has few text, I Play, I Live, but the vivid colorful photographs are alive! This book won the Pura Belpre award 2015.

      I loved the illustrations in this book, I thought they were so beautiful. There was only about two or three words in each page, and the words were also repeated in Spanish. The words described Frida khakis spirit in a very simple fashion. This book was very easy to read, and any one will be able to appreciate the art of the illustrations. A great book.

      Holy cow. This book is a force, and I'm having trouble articulating my thoughts about it. The mixed-media artwork is phenomenal. The details of the puppets, the rich textures and colors, all combined in a way that brings out the best of traditional art and digital manipulation. I rarely like books that have the text in more than one language, but this one works. The poem is simple and beautiful, and I read it to myself in both languages, despite the fact that I only have a Sesame-Street understanding of Spanish. I found that the poem informed my interpretation of the artwork, helping me to understand what was going on. I agree with my friend Allison, that this is a book about creativity and art and life as experienced by Frida, not a biography. You don't have to know about Frida to read this, but you will likely be inspired to find out more. I've never felt that I understood Frida's art, but Yuyi's afterword makes me want to try again.

      Frida Kahlo is a very famous Mexican painter that we all have come to love. Viva Frida is a bilingual book that shows the life of Frida and how she came to be. Although this book is intended for K-3rd grade, I personally feel as though any student would benefit from being this book.

      Viva Frida is a dreamy picture book of/on/about Frida Kahlo. It's not really a biography as much as it is a book celebrating Frida, her aesthetic and imagination. It's written by Yuyi Morales, who has created many beautiful latine picture books, and the illustrations are actually pictures taken by Tim O'Meara of Yuyi's beautifully styled marionette puppets of Frida, Fulang Chang (Frida's monkey), the iconic Frida deer, etc. There are a few traditional illustrations for the dream aspects which are by Yuyi. This was a lovely, dreamy celebration of Frida and I enjoyed it.

      This book is a biography about artist Frida Kahlo. The author herself is of Mexican heritage and explains that she loves to embrace her culture. When the author was younger, she looked up to Frida Kahlo and the values and beliefs she maintained, as well ad Frida's embracing of her own culture. I love how special this book is because it can be something that children use—either because they can relate to and/or are inspired by Frida Kahlo and Mexican culture, or because they simply would like to learn more about who Frida Kahlo was. This book really encourages children to embrace their culture and background, and to even be open to learn more about other important individuals who have had positive impacts on our communities. In this book being a biography, there is no central messag—it simply outlines the life of the wonderful Frida Kahlo, explaining some of her achievements and challenges as well. I also categorized this book as being an international book, due to its mentioning of Mexican culture. It is really cute and has many bright and beautiful illustrations.
