The fiction in this book is just that: fiction. Names, characters, places and events either are products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Any resemblance to actual events or persons living or dead, or any freaky killer clowns is purely coincidental.

This thriller under the big top is for Anthony Giangregorio, without whose invitation this story wouldn’t have been written. Thanks for being a pal and inspiration.

No way, I won’t go in there! Jackson screamed. Even at nine years old he knew better than to go into a haunted house.

So, what, you’re going to spend the rest of your life afraid? his father asked. His old man’s piercing blue eyes gazed into his. His dad had a way of looking tough, even when wearing a black Scooby Doo ball cap.

His dad had disappointment etched on his face, and while Jackson understood his old man wanted him to be strong, he had a hard time believing he could muster the strength to go inside such a scary place.

From the outside, the haunted house was enormous: big black and wide, against a backdrop of trees. The creepy visage of a goblin with yellow eyes loomed over him, the words haunted house written in an orange, swirly font.

We’ll go in together. None of this solo stuff. That was the plan anyway. Did you really think I’d let you go in there alone?

Jackson cast his gaze to the ground. Sadly, he did think his dad wanted him to go in all by himself. He nodded and had to bite back the tears.

I’d never do that. I was going to go with you. Just needed you to be brave, his dad said. Okay?

    I guess.
