About this ebook
The survivors live in a small town centred on a former military research laboratory.
Cut off from the world and living under constant threat of a deadly, persistent chemical fog that circles the globe with the wind, they are forced to hide in underground bunkers and live in fear.
Until a mysterious message, the first communication received in decades, hints at a safe haven. Isaac, a man with nothing to lose, intends to venture from the safety of town and find redemption in the mountains for himself and for the townspeople.
However, in a world where a simple little mistake is enough to kill you, good intentions are sometimes not enough.
In fact, good intentions can be more dangerous...
Especially when your closest friends don't reveal their true motives until it's too late.

Chapter 1
Isaac prepared to leave everything he knew behind. He didn't know if he would return or not. Or even if he would survive the next few days.
He began to inspect his gear and truck, double-checking that everything was ready for the long road ahead. It all needed to be perfect. There was no room for mistakes on a trip so far from the safety of the town.
His truck was well-suited for the trip. It was made during the war, and could survive the fog. It was a scouting vehicle, designed for long-distance trips. The tires were made of a metallic mesh that was solid and couldn't be punctured, like firm steel wool, but they were also light and provided a smooth ride over bumpy ground. It wasn't too fast, but it required no fuel except the light of the sun, and it's batteries could last for days under cloud cover. It was one of the only remnants of old technology that wasn't yet falling apart.
The night before, Isaac took the car out for a test drive. It hadn't been used much in the past few decades, so he needed to be sure it was ready. He rounded corners all around town, listening for telltale clinks and clanks. He could hear the tires meshing together and expanding as they absorbed rocks and potholes. It seemed to drive smoothly, so he assumed everything was OK. He was no expert, after all. He was just eager to get out on the road.
He only drove a car a handful of times, like most people who lived in the town of Janis. He was never comfortable behind the wheel. He never had anywhere to go, so he didn't see the point in learning to drive. But this time was different. He had a purpose, a goal. He stuck his head out
