About this ebook

A collection of sixty-four black-and-white photographs and sixty-two poems, Unfolding in Light offers a vision of hands as images, symbols, and archetypes, allowing the numinous to shine through the mundane. Sisters Joan Scott and Claire Scott provides an intimate pause that gives the reader a quiet moment to reflect on the meaning of everyday hands: an ill child’s hands; a dying woman’s hands; hands of lovers, young and old; hands at work, at play, in pain, in prayer, and in love.

Unfolding in Light - Joan Scott

    Introduction

Unfolding in Light: A Sisters’ Journey in Photography and Poetry invites readers to discover the beauty, simplicity and spirituality that flow through hands. Black-and-white photographs of hands are accompanied by poems written specifically for each photograph. The book offers a vision of hands as images, symbols and archetypes, allowing the numinous to shine through the mundane.

Unfolding in Light provides an intimate pause that gives the reader a moment to reflect on the meaning and message of hands at work, at play, in pain and in love: hands welding, hands knitting, hands strumming, hands painting, an ill child’s hands and hands of lovers, young and old.

Unfolding in Light is about connection—the connection of the camera with hands, hands with words, images and poetry with the reader. It is also about connection between the two sisters who authored the book. Each photograph and poem stands on its own but suggests a wider lens, an invitation to community: the community of children, parents, lovers, artists and musicians. The community of beer drinkers, coffee drinkers, fishermen and card players. The community of prayer.

Unfolding in Light is a celebration of life, an opening to possibility and an experience of artistic elegance.
