Tentang penulis

I am a senior, independent budget traveler. I have traveled extensively. I have been fortunate to live in Indonesia, Austria, Israel, Bahamas, and Africa. When people ask how I can afford to travel so much, I tell them "Its cheaper to travel". My book about Central America details how I traveled there cheaper than I could live in Canada - and I did all of the things I wanted to do. My next project involves the same research for China and S. E. Asia.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugali

We are a +50 year old Canadian couple, Glen & Lori. We have lived a fortunate life, living and working in several parts of the world, and travelling extensively. 2009 we were living in the southern Bahamas. Glen was a construction supervisor building high end resorts. We watched the American economy come to a screaming halt and we knew his working days were numbered. Like many, we had often talked about doing volunteer work in Africa. His layoff notice prompted us to realize we were not getting any younger, and this was likely an opportune time to follow another dream.

We had decided Morinda was our country of choice for a number of reasons. Location, political stability, safety, and things of interest to us, were all determining factors. I Googled Volunteer Morinda and got thousand of hits. As I started to open them, one thing became very clear, it costs in excess of $2000 a week to volunteer in Morinda. I was confident more research would lead to other options. I was wrong.

Two months later I was almost ready to give up. Hours and hours of research had not resulted in any viable financial options. We often use the Lonely Planet website. They have an excellent question and answer board so I decided to post on it. I felt we had nothing to lose. I went to the Morinda section, and posted Canadian couple, 50’s, he is a construction supervisor, she has hotel management background. Looking for a 6 month volunteer position in Morinda. Willing to pay costs, but can not afford to pay extensive fees/donations. The next day I received a very short email - contact Joan at RMD.ORG. Before doing anything else I went to the website to check out RMD. I knew scams were prevalent, and I was not going to get our hopes up.

Their web site was well done and informative. We were able to determine RMD had been in operation for several years. The President, Bernice, was an American nurse who married a Morindian doctor. They met while he was attending school in America. She has spent most of her life in Morinda and speaks the local languages. She handles the accounting. The hospital they are building is in Chrodi. She does not live there, but flies in often. Ralph is an American missionary doctor who has spent his entire life in Morinda and has raised a large family there. Joan, his second wife was also American, and an LPN. They lived in Chrodi and were in charge. The other board member we would be involved with was Pastor Steven, a Moridian minister, who had also been acting Bishop. Ralph and Joan spent half the year travelling in America fundraising, and the other half in Morinda building a hospital complex.

I began a lengthy email correspondence with Joan as I had a lot of questions I needed answered before we made any commitment. She always answered as promptly as she could. Internet there was very intermittent. She answered any and all of our questions. We decided we would like to do this, and we notified them of our arrival date. We would be arriving ten days before they left on their annual trip to America. They informed us we would be expected to keep things running in Chrodi during their absence. We were in Europe at the time, so proceeded getting all of the inoculations required - and there were a lot. Who knew humans needed rabies shots? As I began packing I asked Joan if there was anything they wanted, or needed, from the outside world. Her answer was CHOCOLATE. Great chocolate is readily available in Europe so I stocked up with a good and varied supply.

Africa is big, but you do not realize how big until you travel there. Our flight
