About this ebook

In this second instalment of the Twirlybirch adventures, Beauregard and his little sister Sparkle Snowflake travel with Auntie Gertrude to the South Pacific. Auntie Gertrude's plan is rest and relaxation in a warm setting, but Beauregard has much more in mind.
Island hikes, swimming in warm water, and sandy beaches are all fine and dandy, but when Beauregard goes looking for more excitement, he bites off more than he can chew. Fortunately for him, he travels with his umbrella, and knows how to use it. But how will he deal with a volcano as well as smugglers?

I live in a little hobbit hole at the bottom of a steep hill. It would be the perfect place to float down if I had a large enough umbrella. If I floated too far I'd land in the ocean and that would be just fine on a hot day.The Twirlybirch family first showed up in Saudi Arabia while I was spending a few hot and dusty years in Jeddah. I plan to continue telling Twirlybirch tales since it seems like a worthwhile pastime. Beauregard and Sparkle Snowflake deserve to have their stories told and I'm the only one who knows them.

    Chapter One

    Too Much Snow

Auntie Gertrude sat closer to the wood stove so her old legs could better feel the warmth. The blowing snow outside made her feel as if winter would never end, and the wind rattling the windows and whipping the trees made everything that much colder.

‘It seems this nasty weather will go on forever. I’m beginning to think it’s time for us to have an adventure to some tropical location, where the sun feels hot on your back and nobody has ever heard of scarves or mittens. You know, where we can trade icy fir trees for swaying palm trees and where warm sea breezes replace blowing snow. Maybe we could find a place where surf and sand takes the place of snow and ice.’

‘That gets my vote,’ agreed Beauregard. Earlier in the day he had gotten into trouble and been sent to his room so he was not in a great mood. His little sister, Sparkle Snowflake, had tattled on him after he'd given her a face wash with a handful of snow. He had not enjoyed having to stay in his room like a caged animal.

Beauregard had felt that Sparkle Snowflake deserved the snowy face wash since she'd gotten him in trouble yesterday, too. It was true that he shouldn't have carved his initials just above the floor in the cabinet door, but that didn't mean she had to tell on him. That little tattle tale had ended with him losing his Swiss army knife and more time stuck in his bedroom. ‘I’ve had just about enough of freezing my toes and fingers, even though the sledding is cool. Where do you think you'd like to go, Auntie Gertrude?’

Beauregard and his sister Sparkle Snowflake lived with their parents, James and Sarah Twirlybirch, in their Auntie Gertrude’s home beside a steep hillside. A year ago Beauregard and Sparkle Snowflake had invented a popular sport known as floating. Really, it had been an accidental discovery. Sparkle Snowflake was sitting on a bench with her umbrella halfway up the large hill behind their aunt's house when a big gust of wind had lifted her up and off the ground. She had floated down the hillside and landed gently that first time while Beauregard watched. Now it was too cold for floating and the Twirlybirch children were starting to get cabin fever. They both loved the thought of sunny days filled with floating under large red and white umbrellas.
