What’s it about?
Looking around at all of the problems in the world, we often wish there was someone who could just fix them with a snap of their fingers, or at least a well-thought-out solution.
After reading Freakonomics and SuperFreakonomics, many readers concluded that the authors could come up with a solution to any problem. Readers reasoned: If these writers can dissect problems, as they had in their first two books, and come up with such reasonable answers, surely they can do the same with more pressing concerns.
As a result of this thinking, the authors received regular correspondence from readers asking them to solve the problems of the world – from the obesity epidemic to world hunger.
Mr. Levitt and Mr. Dubner were intrigued by the idea that so many felt problem solving should be a piece of cake.
So they took on the task of writing their third book together. This book, they decided, would be significantly different from its predecessors. They wanted people to see that problem solving takes work; that if it were truly simple we wouldn’t have any problems. They also wanted to show people how to come up with solutions for themselves.
