    All About Chelsea

Chelsea Handler has been working in entertainment since she was 19-years-old, when she moved to LA to pursue acting. It was by accident that the, now famous, comedian stumbled into comedy. While sharing her story of getting a DUI to a class of others reconciling their traffic violation, laughter ensued—and Chelsea was hooked. This prompted Chelsea to shift her focus to standup comedy, instead of acting. This career move has led to a record breaking career as an author, producer, comedian, actress, and late-night TV host.

    Chelsea’s Early Years

Chelsea was born on February 25, 1975. She comes from a big family, where she is the youngest of six siblings. Her mother, Rita, was a homemaker, who moved from Germany in 1958. Her father, Seymour, is a car dealer of Jewish decent. Although her mother was Mormon, Chelsea and her siblings were raised Jewish—and grew up in a Jewish neighborhood in Livingston, New Jersey.

Chelsea always felt like a bit of an outsider, because although she and her family lived in a nice neighborhood—they were the family who drove a Pinto and not the local standard Mercedes, Jaguars, or other high-end car. It is likely this sense of feeling as though she was on the outside, that led to Chelsea’s individuality.

    Chelsea’s Big Break

When it comes to both acting and comedy, you never know which role could be the big break that sets your career path in an entirely new direction. For Chelsea, it was when she landed a role on Oxygen network’s all-female show—Girls Behaving Badly. This hidden camera prank series aired from 2002 to 2005 and featured the cast member’s setting up unsuspecting individuals in hilarious scenarios—where at the end of each segment, the hidden cameras and full prank were revealed. Chelsea described the series as a cross between Sex and the City and Candid Camera.

It was during this series that Chelsea’s range as both a comedian and an actress were noticed by industry insiders. While the pranks on the show were predetermined and loosely scripted, the unpredictability of the innocents being pranked required Chelsea and her cast mates to think on their feet—and adjust their approach as needed—all while keeping a straight face.

The show’s success opened the door to many new projects, including working as a correspondent for The Tonight Show. This is where we were really able to Chelsea’s signature satire, her sometimes dry sense of humor, and her candor when speaking of everything from celebrities to
