Speak Hebrew For Real Primer - Ruti Yudovich

Lesson 1 INTRODUCTION

About This Book:s

This book is a companion to: Learn How to Read Hebrew For Real. It was written for those who are interested in speaking modern Hebrew from scratch. As you go along learning how to READ Hebrew, you will learn how to SPEAK it as well. The Hebrew vocabulary is gradually built according to the order by which the consonants and vowels are introduced in the Learn How to Read Hebrew For Real.

Speak Hebrew For Real, Primer consists of: 200  Hebrew words and basic grammar and sentence structure. Since this book was written for people with no prior knowledge of spoken Hebrew, I had to limit it to singular verbs (only in present tense), adjectives, pronouns and nouns. At the end of this book you'll know how to express basic wants and likes; what you're going to do and where you're going to go; introducing yourself; greeting others and ordering at restaurants. You'll also learn some slang, colloquial words and expressions. More than half of the book's conversations and sentences are translated for you into English.

The vowels to the words do NOT follow the formal grammar rules. Since some vowels and symbols in the Learn How to Read Hebrew For Real book are introduced in much later chapters to avoid confusion, I used only the vowels you have learned. Regardless, you WILL be decoding the words the way they should sound.

Each lesson introduces new words.

At the end of each lesson there's a section that reviews  all the words you have learned so far.

How to Use This Book?

If you use this book as a companion to "Learn How to Read Hebrew For Real," then just follow the order of the lessons. Learn the letters of Lesson 1, and 2 and then go to this companion book; read the new words and use them in sentences.

Since it was hard to construct many words from only a few consonants, lesson 1 is the intro to this book. Lesson 3&4, 5&6 are put together.

As you progress on "Learn How to Read Hebrew For Real," you'll start seeing a section called Hebrew Words. You can add words you consider important to your vocabulary list.

If you already know how to read Hebrew and purchased this book to learn how to speak basic Hebrew, progress on this book as fast as you want. The first few words are almost off the wall, but as you go along you'll be able to construct basic sentences; communicate in Hebrew with friends, family and people on the street.

How to Learn New Words that Will Stick for Real?

Whenever you learn a new word, make at least 10 sentences with it before you continue to read the rest of the lesson. Fill in the English words where you don't know their Hebrew equivalent.

For example:

Let's say you are learning the word כּוֹס - Kohs =  cup. But you don't know how to say: 'want,' 'wine', 'milk', 'on', etc... This is what you would say out loud:

I want a כּוֹס of wine;  I need a כּוֹס of water; the כּוֹס is on the table; who wants a כּוֹס of milk? etc...  Make as many sentences as you can until you KNOW that the new word is YOURS -- you OWN it.

When you get to the end of a lesson, you will find a section called: Vocabulary Review. It is important that you check and see if you remember the words before you move on to the next lesson. If you forgot or you are not certain of the words' meaning, then take the time to make more sentences. Build a stable foundation, and when you reach the end of this book you will find yourself speaking Hebrew with ease and confidence — ready to move up to the next level.

Basic Information about Hebrew

Nouns and adjectives have a gender, i.e., nothing in Hebrew is neuter; it is either masculine or feminine. There are simple rules to ascertain which noun is feminine and which noun is masculine.

When you want to ask a question. You construct a regular sentence but then at the end of the sentence you have to go up in pitch.

Hebrew does not have capital letters.

There's no 'am', 'is', 'are', 'a', 'an' in Hebrew.

Spoken language has to be heard. SAY it. SPEAK it. It is essential to read aloud. When you use your sight (reading), motor (writing, speaking) and hearing senses you are literally watering those seeds (words, grammar) and thus you will end up with a flourishing field of Hebrew.

Lesson 2

New Word:

בַּר  ‏              (son (old Hebrew
