About this ebook
It is of course true that Jonathan Edwards was a combination of many rare things: an exceptional intellectual, a masterly preacher, a cavernous theologian, a devoted husband and father, a college president, and much more. But all of these roles flowed out of one simple and essential reality: Jonathan Edwards was a Christian. He was a believer who followed Jesus Christ in repentant faith. He loved God, and he sought to live for Him.
This book celebrates the unique life and ministry of Jonathan Edwards. It peels back the cover of his life, to show us what a life devoted to our sovereign Lord can look like. It causes us to use our own God-given gifts for the salvation of sinners, the strengthening of God’s church, and the glory of God. You do not need to be a scholar to enjoy and benefit from the story and rich lessons about Edwards' life.

Jonathan Edwards Lover of God - Owen Strachan
Minnesota
Jonathan Edwards stands tall in America’s historical memory and the history of the church. There is little agreement, though, on who he really was.
To some, Edwards was a great philosopher. In the opinion of several notable historians, Edwards represents the greatest philosophical thinker America has produced. On questions that most of us struggle to even comprehend, the New England mastermind provided answers still considered influential today.
To others, Edwards was a great preacher. Mulling over the truths of the Word for days at a time, Edwards wrote sermons that stand as some of the most powerful ever produced. For this group, Edwards is noteworthy primarily as a minister of the Word, one who modeled biblical faithfulness and who saw seasons of incredible blessing fall upon His ministry.
Still others home in on Edwards as a great theologian. They argue that Edwards should be known most for his work to sharpen Christian understanding of the great doctrines of the faith: salvation, holiness, the afterlife, among others.
The multi-dimensionality of Edwards is apparent, and can also include Edwards’s status as a college president, the founder of a family dynasty, a husband, and a mentor. Jonathan Edwards was a complex and gifted person, one who defies easy characterization.
With all of these roles, and because of His solemn bearing, Jonathan Edwards intimidates us, to put it plainly. We recall scraps of his writing from high school English classes, and remember vaguely threats of damnation and complex language that was hard to understand. Knowing how deep he went, we shy away from Edwards, aware that we can’t play in his league. At a fundamental level, we feel he’s just not like us.
Jonathan Edwards was a combination of many rare gifts. But all of these flowed out of one simple and essential reality: Jonathan Edwards was a Christian. He was a believer who followed Jesus Christ in repentant faith. He loved God, and He sought to live for Him. In this fundamental way, Jonathan Edwards was just like you and me.
In this book, we present Edwards’s life and thought in short, accessible chapters illustrated by Edwards’s sermons and writings. It may take a little time to get used to his style, but it is our belief that investing even a little effort in reading his original writings will yield a bountiful spiritual payoff. His meditations are so deep, so thoughtful, and so fresh that we are confident you will profit from them if you give them a chance. We will splice in our commentary as we sketch a general picture of his life, and we will offer brief suggestions for application from his life and teaching that we hope will be of use to you in your personal reading or in the context of group study.
Though we both relish academic history and love working exhaustively with Edwards and his writings, we do not try to cover every base in this book. In a text of this size, we cannot, though the additional volumes of the Essential Edwards Collection allow the reader to delve much deeper into his thinking and preaching. We seek in Jonathan Edwards: Lover of God to make Edwards accessible, knowing that if we can succeed in that quest, readers of a wide range of backgrounds—whether those who find him intimidating, those who have never heard of him, or those whose t-shirts identify him as a homeboy
—will experience the joy of deepened theology and enlivened spirituality. This book is intended for the uninitiated, but we hope and intend for it—and this series—to be of use to pastors, students, church leaders, small groups, and many more
