Welcome to Durango
Durango is nestled in the Animas River Valley surrounded by the San Juan Mountains. The Animas River runs through downtown and is ideal for fly fishing, whitewater rafting, kayaking, and canoeing. Outdoor activities popular in Durango include hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, hunting, and golfing.
Main Avenue cuts through downtown Durango, home to clothing boutiques, gift shops, restaurants, and bars. The main restaurants serve Mexican, Italian, French, Thai, Japanese, and American cuisine. Main Avenue host thousands of tourists each week, making it a popular tourist destination.
Durango, Colorado is a true railroad town. In 1873, during the Colorado Gold Rush, railroads were built throughout the state. In 1880 the Denver and Rio Grande Railway formed the town of Durango and connected it by rail to Denver.
During 1882 the railroad built a 45-mile branch from Durango to Silverton, Colorado. Today the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (D&S NGRR) has been called Number One North American Train Trip
by National Geographic Traveler. The D&S NGRR museum offers a view of old cars and railroad memorabilia. Tourists can choose family or adult-only coaches to and from Silverton.
Another day trip from Durango is Mesa Verde National Park. Mesa Verde is the most extensive concentration of ancient cliff dwellings in the United States. The Ancestral Pueblo made it their home from A.D. 600 to 1300.
The San Juan Skyway is a tour in the San Juan National Forest. The Skyway is one of the most scenic road trips in the United States.
Located 27 miles north of Durango the Purgatory Ski Resort is a major attraction. Both winter and summer activities are featured. A hotel, dining, and shopping make the resort one of the finest in Colorado.
