A Perfect Tour of Montenegro
Day 1
Cetinje and Lovćen
From Podgorica airport, drive to Cetinje, Montenegro’s historic former capital, visit its cluster of museums, and enjoy your first lunch in Montenegro at Konak. Drive up Mt Lovćen, then walk up the final flight of steps to its airy summit and mausoleum. Drive to Kotor, stopping to try some local ham at Njeguši.
Day 2
Kotor
Spend the day exploring Kotor’s Unesco-listed old town, visit the Maritime Museum and climb up to the fortress.
Day 3
Bay of Kotor
Drive anticlockwise around the Bay of Kotor, stopping at Perast to take a boat out to the tiny island of Our Lady of the Rocks. Have lunch in Perast (or later in Morinj), then continue around the Bay of Kotor, stopping to see the mosaics in Risan. Take the car ferry from Kamenari to Lepante and return to Kotor via Tivat.
Day 4
Costal drive
Drive south along the coast, stopping to visit Budva’s old town and – if you can find space – for a swim at Jaz beach. Continue south past the iconic Sveti Stefan to Stari Bar, stop for lunch at Kaldirma then visit the ruins of the historic old town. Continue to Ulcinj, and watch the sunset from the old town.
Day 5
Food and wine
Explore Ulcinj’s old town in the morning then drive to Virpazar on the shores of Lake Skadar, taking the older, more scenic road or the Sozina Tunnel. Take a food and wine tour from Virpazar, stopping at Rijeka Crnojevića for lunch at Stari Most, and visiting some of the small vineyards west of Virpazar.
Day 6
Lake Skadar
Spend a day kayaking on Lake Skadar, with a picnic by the lake and dinner at Konoba Badanj.
Day 7
Mountain journey
Drive to Žabljak, stopping on the way to visit Ostrog Monastery and possibly making a detour to see Lake Piva. Have lunch at Koliba. From Žabljak either drive, or hire mountain bikes, for the 8km (5 miles) trip up to Ćurevac, with a 30 minute walk at the end to reach a spectacular viewpoint at the edge of the Tara Canyon at its deepest point.
Day 8
Prokletije
Drive from Žabljak to Plav, taking the old road via Mojkovac. Continue to Gusinje and the Grbaja Valley and hike up to Volušnica, taking in jaw-dropping views of the Proketije peaks. Return to Kula Damjanova by Lake Plav.
Day 9
Biogradska Gora
Drive back towards Podgorica, stopping to enjoy an easy walk around the shore of Biogradska Lake, and later stopping to visit the Morača Monastery.
Day 10
Podgorica
Spend the morning exploring the Montenegrin capital, leaving enough time to enjoy
