    SEAMS

    RUN-AND-FELL OR FLAT SEAM

THIS is the strongest seam for any purpose; being smooth also, it is recommended for all underclothing and babies’ clothes.

It can be used for slight curves provided the turnings are very narrow.

For side or under-arm seams the turning must be towards the back of a garment.

When hemming or felling is used the seam is turned and sewn on the inside of the garment.

If back-stitching is used in place of running and hemming the seam is turned and stitched on the right or outside of the garment as in men’s shirts.

    HEM-STITCHED FLAT SEAM

A strong, smooth seam bordered on each side by hem-stitching which gives it a light and decorative effect.

    Hem-stitched Flat Seam.

Showing arrangement of seam, tacked ready for hem-stitcing.

(the under piece has been pushed up in the drawing to show overlapping).

For curved or sloping seams where threads cannot be pulled out the open-work effect is obtained by punched hem-stitching.

Method. On each of the pieces of material to be joined together a group of three or four threads is withdrawn about 3/4 in. from the raw edge.

On b the raw edge is turned on to the right side to touch the open line.

On a the raw edge is turned on to the wrong side to touch the open line.

    a is then placed on
