About this ebook

The Syracuse Nationals NBA team moved to Philadelphia in 1963,, becoming the Philadelphia 76ers.. The Philadelphia Warriors moved to the west coast, becoming the San Francisco Warriors. My e-book looks at the first year of the 76ers with old pro Dolph Schayes, the NBA's all-time leading scorer, as player-coach. Schayes comments about his team are interspersed with game summaries, player descriptions and statistics. This was an era when National Basketball Association games were played on consecutive days with the players often getting little rest in between. The small crowds attending the games are noteworthy, especially when compared to the masses of fans drawn by the NBA of today.

Opening their season in Detroit, Dolph Schayes had replaced Alex Hannum as coach of the Philadelphia 76ers in their first season away from Syracuse. Schayes was not present for Philadelphia’s debut against the Pistons on Wednesday night, October 16, 1963. It was the first game of 80 in the 1963-1964 season.

The 76ers backcourt was composed of Hal Greer, the NBA’s 9th leading scorer in 1962-1963 and ex-Philadelphia Warrior Larry Costello. Greer had averaged 19.5 points per game the previous season.

6’9 Johnny Kerr, a nine-year vet, was Philadelphia’s center. The starting forwards were 6’6 Chet Walker and 6’7" Lee Shaffer.

Schayes, a 15-year NBA veteran of 1,035 games, had scored 19,115 points in his career. As player coach he emphasized, We need rebounding. A better job off the boards and we should make a good-run for the division title.

Philadelphia’s three front liners were vital for rebounding. Another key boards man was Connie Dierking, who at 6’9 ½ played for Cleveland during the final years of the American Basketball League. Another prominent rebounder was 6’8 Len Chappell from Wake Forest.

As the season began Hubie White was filling in for key reserve guard Paul Neumann who had torn a ligament during the 76ers were tour of Hawaii. White was traded to Philadelphia from the Warriors for 6’6" John Windsor and Al Bianchi. White and Neumann backed up Greer and Larry Costello in the 76ers’ back court. Dave Gambee, who averaged 11.2 points per game, and Ben Warley (4.8), formed the second line front court.
