JO-KIN
My name is Josh Atkins. Before this all began I was an eleven-year-old kid who dreamed of being an intergalactic game fighter, code name Jo-Kin. I dreamed about blasting off into the cosmos to defend the planet from alien monsters and demons.
Jo-Kin—superhero, protector of the universe.
But I didn’t think there was much chance of that.
I was just a big goof ball who loved building rockets and launching them in the backyard. One time I launched a rocket and it came crashing down on the clothesline. All the clothes caught on fire. I was grounded for a week.
I was just a geek.
My favourite Star Battles T-shirt had a front pocket where I kept my notebook and pen. I was president of the Space Explorers Club at Sunny Hills School. I loved gazing up into the night sky at all the twinkling stars and planets, and dreaming I could be an astronaut one day.
Sounds stupid, right?
I knew the name of every planet and orbiting moon in the solar system, and how many stars shine in the Milky Way. Last summer I was the first one at school to gaze through the club’s telescope and find the Southern Cross. I couldn’t believe it.
Better still, I tracked the orbit of our moon through all its phases.
But so what? All the kids at school thought I was a big nerd. They called me Super Geek. They laughed at me and teased me because of my deathly pale skin and because I was hopeless at sports. I couldn’t catch or kick a ball, ever. Or even a cold.
All I wanted was a chance to prove myself, and be a superhero. To save the world, save the universe ... save something, at least.
But how was that ever going to happen?
I was really good at playing Space Champs on the computer, destroying the enemy, fighting supersonic battles, notching up perfect scores. I was faster than anyone I knew. My fingers flew across the keys and click codes at lightning speed.
But my parents never knew. I never told them. I knew they wouldn’t understand. Mum and Dad are total noobs when it comes to technology. Seriously, they wouldn’t know the difference between a Weez console and a TV remote.
One time they banned me from using my computer for a whole week. They said I spent too much time on it.
They just didn’t get it.
Chapter 2
WANTED!
One morning I was flicking through the Cosmic News when an ad screamed out at me:
WOW! That’s me all right, I thought. A Super Space Kid.
This would be my big chance to zoom off into space. I could worry about getting permission from Mum and Dad later.
I decided to apply for the job online.
I crept down the hallway past my nosy big sister’s room. Stella's door was vibrating to the beat of ‘Rocket Boy’, but somehow she heard me.
She poked her head out the door. ‘Yeah?" she said. ‘What are you looking at?’
‘You, you big dummy.’
She slammed the door in disgust and turned the volume up to max.
I snuck past my pesky little brother’s room. Marty was building a Lego spaceship. I could see him through the crack in the door. Luckily he didn’t see me and he kept on playing.
I headed downstairs to the computer and turned it on. I set up a scheduled blog post that would announce where I was just in case something went wrong. Mum and Dad would only worry otherwise. That way I could suss it out and tell them later. If it was all cool, I could delete the post.
Next I punched into the Super Space Kids website and found the job application.
I hit send and KAPOW! It was battle stations.
My pulse pattered faster than a supersonic jet. I went straight from entering my name to saving my life—and the galaxy.
Grisly alien monsters attacked my spaceship with their laser guns, threatening to destroy everyone I knew, including me. Obliterate us to smithereens.
I battled against the evil monsters at expert level. Beads of sweat trickled down my forehead. I had to destroy their deadly enemy ships before they destroyed me.
My fingers drummed fast on the keyboard as I typed in codes and responses. The mouse glided over the pad. My heart was ticking like it might explode.
I clicked on the firing button.
BLAST!
ZOOM!
KABOOM!
The screen image shattered in technicolour. My pulse pounded as I waited for the final score. It flickered onto the screen ... yes! An online record—a perfect score of a zillion points. I’d won every single set!
Game over. PHEW!
The computer buzzed, blinked, flashed fluoro lights. A message exploded onto the screen.
With my heart pounding, I checked the SMS on my phone.
I’d reached level two in the competition in a head-to-head battle against my... my competitors. GULP! Now I had to meet a bunch of strange kids and compete against them. Kids I’d never met before.
Did I tell you I get nervous?
What chance would I have against them? But if I was going to achieve my dream of blasting off into space, I had to win. I had to. This was my big chance.
I called Kris, my Space Explorers Club mate.
‘Hey, Kris, ’ I said. ‘You’ll never believe what’s happened. I won! I’m going to the finals on Saturday.’
‘Won what?’ Kris said. ‘What finals? Where?’
‘Oops. Can’t tell you. I forgot, it's top secret.’
‘Josh, we’re mates. You can tell me anything.’
‘I promise I’ll explain later. Wish me luck. Gotta go.’
Next I had to work out how to get all the way into Star City by
