    Karen Burkey is a personnel and human resources professional for a government agency of the state of Ohio. She lives with her husband and their two dogs and four casts who they call their furry children. Her favorite things to do are reading, writing, and watching television and movies, although hiking in the woods is pretty high up on her list, too. Though her writing isn’t perfect, Kari is a perfectionist when it comes to telling a story. Whether it’s fan fiction or an original novel, she finds the most challenging part of writing to be getting that first draft down on paper.

      Introduction

      The world of fanfiction was once a thing of shadows and secrecy. In recent years it has come more and more into the light. With the advent of the internet, it became so much easier for fans to share the stories they wrote. They could share them through electronic mail instead of using the much slower postal service. And as the internet grew and matured, it became easier yet to share those stories. As it became easier to share, more people began to write. Today we can post them to blogs and websites. Thousands of people can read our fanfiction with the click of a mouse button.

      Several of the most famous works of entertainment today started out as fanfiction. Fifty Shades of Gray and Wicked come immediately to mind. They may have begun as fanfiction, but today they are their own entities, known around the world.

      Once upon a time, Fifty Shades of Gray was a novel-length Twilight fic called Master of the Universe. According to Wikipedia, today the Fifty Shades trilogy is available in more than fifty languages. It has sold more than one hundred million copies. The first book is a blockbuster movie with the second in the series scheduled for release in February 2017.

      Wicked is a well-known and beloved Broadway musical. Broadway greats such as Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel have starred in the production. But Wicked the Musical is based on the novels of Gregory Maguire. And Maguire’s novels are based on the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum and the 1939 Oscar-winning movie The Wizard of Oz. Wicked is what we call a transformative work, or in a word, fanfiction.

      And, repeating the cycle, they both inspire their own pieces of fanfiction.

      But what is fanfiction? Why do people write it? Isn’t it illegal?
