About this ebook

This parody self-help book for writers is filled with hilariously misguided tips, factual-looking charts, and other advice that knowingly pokes fun at writerly foibles while still cheering would-be authors on. With this book, struggling writers can find suggestions for effective paragraph shapes, tips on where to find inspiration (in your reflection, in the shapes of gum stuck to the ground, in a consultation with your doctor), thoughtful poses for author photos, pull-out procrastination excuses, and much more. How to Success! is filled with enough almost-helpful advice to keep aspiring writers amused, unblocked, and on their way to literary fame.

This reads like a comedy routine gone bad. Perhaps some of these segments done live on stage could be interpreted as funny, but on the printed page they just come across as (no other way of putting it): lame. I don't think I even smiled, let along chuckled or laughed while reading this even. Not even a grimace. This is the kind of book that ends up at a FIVE BELOW store in a bin with a lot of other humorous books that go for something like 10 books for a dollar! Sorry. Just didn't work for me.

Slightly witty, quick read. Helps to make light of the exasperation of writing.

The book tries really hard to make light of the difficulties of writing and finding success as an author; however, many of the jokes fall flat. The stock image photography is at times witty, but often seems like a ploy to take up space on the page.

How to Success! (or not)The book is set up to give advice- funny, bad and good (very little of the last one!). Filled with short quips, pictures and (often bad) jokes about writing... I understand what the writer was trying to do but it was just too much pessimism in such a condensed format. It would have been nice if the 'negative' advice was more balanced with real, serious, helpful advice. I am all for poking fun but an entire book of it was just too much.

I wanted to like this book, I really did. There are brief flashes of greatness throughout this short anti-advice book, but it just fell short for me. I kept putting it down because it really just wasn't interesting to me. There are way, way too many pages filled with stock photos, which to me distracts from the text. The book wants to be a funny writer's "guide" that purposely gives bad/stupid/wrong/irrelevant advice, but most of it falls flat and just ends up being dumb.

I want to write a silly review about how this totes showed me how to become a rich and famous author, but honestly this is really entertaining. It's basically a satirical guide to appearing to be an author, right down to attire, surroundings, and facial expressions. I particularly appreciated the screenwriter tips. Best of all, it's short enough that it doesn't overstay its welcome. Recommended for people who like writing, successful and otherwise.
