Tara:
I STOOD FOR A moment after our shift and watched Frankie as she snipped roses and put them in her basket. Her profile was ravishing, with her black glistening wings furling and unfurling as she smelled her flowers. I have always wanted to get to know her, and watching her now, I knew we would be good friends—soon.
She turned towards us almost immediately.
Well, now, look at ye!
she said quizzically. Och, but something is amiss. Tell me what it is that brings ye to me, for I don’t require small talk.
She nodded in my direction, although I saw her take a quick survey of Cain. Sit, Tara of the House of O’Hare. I have been wondering when our paths would finally cross. I have seen you often in my visions.
Have you seen anything else?
Not surprised, as Frankie’s ‘visions’ are legendary amongst the Fae.
Och, aye, but I haven’t been able to decipher its meaning. Something about a Dark Hallow.
She stared at Cain for a long moment and added, Ye have been in m’visions as well. I know that Tara here calls ye Faewolf and I see ye two are mated. I know a little as m’dearest Wendy told me about yer trials this past year.
She smiled and it was, I thought, like sunshine. She waved her hand and said, I’m that pleased to see ye looking so well, both of ye.
Cain inclined his head but said nothing other than to reach for my hand and put my fingers to his lips.
Frankie clapped and laughed. Right then,
she said. Why are ye here?
She had said we didn’t need small talk, but here we were, small talking, so I laughed and said, Right, amenities done, I am sorry to tell you, Frankie, we have a real big problem.
It was in that moment I felt a sure prickle of fear scurry up my spine. I knew, I sensed, that something awful was about to happen. We had to act quickly. So I dove right in. I am going to just give it to you straight. Rheams is a dark player who thinks that one of the Dark Princes is his father. He is obsessed with getting to him and means to capture you, hold you hostage, and force Graely to help him.
Her wings unfurled, and her eyes flashed. There’ll be no one forcing m’Graely to do anything he doesn’t wish to do.
Graely will do whatever it takes to save you from Rheams, and this time, he shouldn’t,
I explained, and heard the fear in my voice. "Frankie, we all have to go to Daoine. Now. Mind-link with Graely and tell him where we are going. Have your father meet us at the queen’s palace."
Sit and explain yerself. This sounds too—
"Didn’t you hear me? Rheams is Prince Hordly’s hybrid son!" I screamed because suddenly I knew we were out of time.
A slow, hard clap made us all look away from each other to find the villain of the piece, with two beta werewolves in human form in front of him, slightly blocking a direct line to him. He was using them as a shield.
"Hordly’s son?" Frankie repeated, her voice full of astonishment. She got to her feet, and looked towards the beta werewolves and Rheams.
All at once, all hell broke loose! Without further warning, the beta werewolves raised their spears. I knew at once what the spearheads consisted of: iron and silver.
I have never known such terror. Not for me, but for my Cain. That fear was mind-numbing. It took me in its folds and froze my blood as I watched, unable to stop them from attacking my mate.
Cain took two spearheads into his chest because he jumped in front of me. He jumped in front of me! Why did he do that?
I bent over him as he fell to his knees. He took another spearhead in the neck, then he collapsed as a spear grazed, only grazed, my forehead.
They weren’t concerned about me though, and I watched, helpless, as Frankie deflected spear after spear and then took one to her diaphragm.
I screamed out a curse at Rheams as I watched Frankie go limp. She pulled the spear from her middle and put out her hand.
A ball of fire shot out from her fist and hit one beta wolf, then another fireball hit the other werewolf before Rheams took up the discarded spears. I put out my hand and called on an ancient spell to freeze him in place, but the iron, that little bit of iron already flowing through my blood made my magic impotent.
Frankie lifted her fist again, but before she could aim a fireball at Rheams, he stood over her and stabbed her again and again.
Iron would flow through her freely. Iron and silver, though the silver would not poison a Fae. The silver had been meant for Cain.
Rheams needed Frankie to draw out Graely. But if he pumped too much iron into her, she would die.
Stop…you don’t want her dead,
I yelled at Rheams even as the world began to spin. He leveled a spear at me and I dodged it, but, once again, it grazed me.
Frankie whispered to me before her eyes closed, Iron poison, Tara. Tara…can ye reach m’ Moonweed?
My beautiful Fae mother raises herbs and had taught me a great deal about their different uses. I immediately saw the flower she was speaking of.
Frankie raised the all-powerful Moonweed in her garden. That was a plus for our side. I crawled towards it while Rheams snatched Frankie up by her long black hair. I saw her tightly furl her wings as he dragged her.
I cut off a handful of the powerful herb and stuck it in my bodice.
I was near passing out, but I heard Frankie, who must have been suffering greatly with all the iron that now flowed freely through her blood, "Ye will die, sir, for this day’s work. M’Graely will not stop until he has killed ye with his own hands, och, and I will live to see it happen."
So saying, she passed out.
Damn, I liked her, but we, all of us, were in deep shit!
My Cain had taken a double bolt of poison and was unconscious. I reached for and got his limp hand. Silver could kill his wolf. Iron could kill the Fae in him. Both were rushing through his blood. Would the Moonweed work against both? I could only hope.
And then the world went black for me as well.
~ One ~
PRINCE BRESLYN WATCHED HIS elegant queen as she leaned against her consort, Milesian leader, Morgan LeBlanc.
She rarely displayed emotion, but he saw it pass over her face and flicker in her luminous eyes. Frankie was a favorite of hers. She had watched and helped train her into the exquisite being that she now was. The news that Frankie had been taken in such a fashion had temporarily set her off balance because it was unthinkable.
The level of concern he sensed from Queen Aaibhe was not something his queen was wont to feel or exhibit, which further confirmed his belief that they were headed for murky waters. If she was this concerned, it meant things were even worse than they appeared.
Morgan LeBlanc was tall and muscular and he took the queen’s hand to his lips. Prince Breslyn watched as the two looked into one another’s eyes and he knew she drew comfort from her mate.
Queen Mab of Daoine put up her hand and said, This won’t be allowed to stand. Not now, not when we were enjoying the comforts of peace.
Nuad, the Chief Royal Tracker and Queen Mab’s mate, stepped forward and put his hand on the hilt of his sword. Never fear, My Queen, we will pick up their tracks and find them.
Mab inclined her head, but Nuad took another step towards her and lifted her chin so that when he spoke, he spoke to her. "I have already sent our best trackers out to start the search. Make no mistake, we shall find them."
Prince Breslyn kept his doubts to himself and then was distracted by Graely, who had just punched a hole in Queen Aaibhe’s wall. If matters weren’t so dire, Breslyn would have laughed.
Aaibhe raised a brow, waved a finger, and the wall was repaired, but Graely continued to rant until he stopped and came face to face with Breslyn.
Graely took his friend’s leather vest in his hands and shook him. "We stand here and talk…Breslyn. I can’t do it. I must find Frankie. I must. He shook the note he had found at the cottage retreat he shared with Frankie.
This was on our door…this says he has Frankie and Princess Tara. He says instructions will follow. What the hell, Breslyn? What the hell?"
Can you link with Frankie?
Breslyn asked, knowing full well that had Graely been able to, he would have already said.
"No, no, I keep trying. Breslyn, where could he have her that I can’t link with her? Even if she were asleep…or, may all the universe forbid, be unconscious, our link is so strong, I would feel her. Bres, I can’t feel her."
Breslyn put a hand on his shoulder. He adored Frankie. She had been a part of his family from the start—looking out for his son, Bray, whenever called upon to do so. "We’ll find her…that is," he grinned widely, "if she doesn’t find us first. This is Frankie we are talking about. Your little spitfire is already working on a way out of her mess. Not to mention her father. Deimne will tear this world apart searching for her. Between us all, the villain who took her will soon live only long enough to regret the day he ever…"
Yes, yes…that is Frankie,
Graely interrupted in a frenzy.
In the meantime, Graely, you are no good to Frankie like this. Right now, we need to formulate a plan. I believe the creature who calls himself the son of your brother has been planning this for a very long time,
Breslyn said, retying the leather string that held his dark blond hair in place at the nape of his neck.
"My brother, Hordly, has never tried to redeem himself. He isn’t Pestale. He has never loved anyone. My Frankie is in the clutches of Hordly’s son. Breslyn…we have to find her now. Graely turned to Aaibhe, who was in deep conversation with Queen Mab.
My Queen…I mean you no disrespect, but why have you not used your orb to find Frankie?"
Graely, it was the first thing I tried to do when the news was brought to me. She is shrouded in darkness, and even my orb was unable to break through. It will take time, but we will find her. You must be patient.
Graely’s face went rigid and he moved off towards one of the large windows overlooking Queen Aaibhe’s rose garden.
Prince Breslyn watched him worriedly, sure that Graely was using his Dark Power to search for Frankie and Princess Tara. Graely had sworn off Dark Magic for Frankie, but in this instance, Breslyn couldn’t blame him. If someone
