Silence to Stillness - Vishnu Prasad

    Introduction:

The journey began with a question

It all started with a simple question that I asked my teachers. Why am I not able to meditate? Why am I flooded with never-ending thoughts? I am sure many of you have had the same dilemma, with these questions bombarding your mind.

Countless people across the globe know and understand every single aspect of meditation. They love and are passionate about meditation, yet many of them have experienced hurdles and obstacles in an attempt to mastering the process. While many of them, due to their strict adherence to the practice and inexplicable levels of dedication have crossed these hurdles, there are many who have lost themselves in this fight. They lost the fight because they were not guided properly to use the knowledge and system or they failed to remain consistent.

Meditation is a like bridge that connects our inner and outer selves. While there is much said and written about meditating to ease stress, do you really think you can sit quietly in a place and in silence when your mind is under the attack of some really grueling thoughts? Well, no. Your mind will be looking for a way to solve the stress that is troubling it at the moment! It will be like, Let me deal with this stress first; I will think about meditation later. I turned to my teachers in the hope that they would provide the solution to my problem and the answers I got provided me with the inspiration to write this book.

Meditation is not a pill that cures your stress. It is a preventive measure that will help you combat stress. The tendency is that we only try to meditate if we come under the ferocious talons of stress. The more we try to push it away from us with meditation, the closer and closer it comes to us. This of course, leaves you upset and frustrated, and flooded with thoughts.

Studies have proved that stress is bound to impair the cognitive functioning. stress evokes cognitive representations of the current situation that mostly consist of invasive thoughts about the state, and the individual struggles to suppress them; should a non-related task be performed, what usually happens is that the energy invested into those thoughts uses most of the person’s cognitive capacities, and the task is performed at a lower level, as cognitive functioning is impaired.

There may have been times when you may have sat down with the intention to meditate, only to find your mind betraying your intention by moving around hither and thither. You are not alone all those who have mastered the art of meditation have faced this issue. I was also not spared, I used to come face to face with the very thoughts that I wanted to think about the least.

I felt lost whenever I wanted to meditate. I was finding it difficult to concentrate. My mind was talking and talking and talking…

As I started meditating, the next confusion was... What type of meditation is the right one? A valid question given the fact that there are countless types of meditating techniques… I used to fall asleep while meditating. I was not able to sit comfortably and calmly in a place… my knee and back hurt… my skin would start itching… I felt thirsty… and then, I felt frustrated and bored…

The end result was that I slowly started procrastinating in my practice and my attempts to reduce the pace of my constantly troubling thoughts resulted in failure! There have been days when my mind, or rather my ego – the ‘false’ self – whatever you would like to call it – tried to deter me with harsh words like You will never be able to do it. Meditation is only for the monks. And so on…

That was fifteen years ago…. And I will be turning thirty-three soon… I have been practicing and teaching meditation for over 12 years now. Many of my students have faced similar roadblocks and I have been able to guide them through the process by sharing the knowledge I acquired from my spiritual gurus! They have also implemented these teachings and knowledge in their life, are reaping benefits and benefits…

Talking about the benefits of meditation, most of you have read about the life transforming qualities this wonderful art of silencing your mind brings with it. It is, perhaps, one of the quintessential elements that a person needs today to mute the noise of the outer world and reach out to his/her Inner self.

Do you know how many thoughts your brain processes each hour of the day? Experts estimate that the brain processes between 60,000 – 80,000 thoughts a day. That’s an average of 2500 – 3,300 thoughts per hour. That’s incredible.

Imagine the sense of achievement when you gain mastery over this thought process… Isn’t that really wonderful?

    Change is constant!

The world is changing and, so are we! Stress has become an inevitable epidemic in this constantly changing world. This is, probably the number one reason why yoga and meditation retreats are becoming immensely popular and in demand across the world. This reflects the desperate search for peace and silence.

We are losing our ability to focus. Our concentration levels are taking a major dip. The negative impacts of these factors are widely visible in all the realms of our lives. When people are under stress, they begin ruminating. Rumination is when you overthink or obsess about situations or life events, such as work or relationships. Research has shown that rumination is associated with a variety of negative consequences, including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, binge-drinking, and binge-eating.

Distractions catch you off guard and derail your task entirely. Recent studies say that the human mind gets distracted every three minutes. To regain concentration, you need close to 25 minutes. Many people recommend meditation as a medium to restore concentration levels but the problem is that our mind refuses to go on a silent mode so that we can focus! From the moment we wake up we start responding to the stimuli of the outside world instead of siting and reflecting on true self. We are busy running and don’t have the time to spend our own self.

    The Different Models of Meditation

There are countless meditation centers across the globe that are preaching and teaching various traditional meditation techniques, with roots that grow deep into the complex philosophies. While those who are on a spiritual journey might be able to understand the concepts, the average person fails to comprehend and is quite often confused. There are certain meditation practices like the guided meditations that sound simple and easy to practice but in reality, the practice does not bear any results as it is similar
