About this ebook
A Way West, R.P. McAlister Family History and Genealogy, encompasses the history and genealogy of eight families: Brittain, Gibbs, Humble, Keller, McAlister, Perkins, Powers and Steinmetz. These are ancestral links to Raymond Powers McAlister (Ray) and Minnie Gay Humble McAlister (Gay).
As a child, I was told stories of connections to passage on the Mayflower, and roles ancestors played in the American Revolutionary War.
I learned how a great-grandfather fought in the American Civil War, survived and was left with a disabled hand. A different ancestor also served and kept a journal. My mother let me handle that leather bound diary and the eyeglasses the soldier had worn.
A grandfather, an architect, would draw ink drawings for me with his palsied hand. I did not know he was an icon, an architect to the film stars of the early twentieth century, a man who held a distinguished place in Montana and Wyoming history.
His wife came West by covered wagon to homestead. Her job as a five-year-old child on that journey was to gather dried ‘buffalo chips,’ bison dung, which the family burned for their campfires since the plains offered no wood.
These are the stories handed down to me. Now I share them with you.

Introduction
When I was a young woman, elder family members would on occasion hand me a manila envelope full of documents, or a spiral bound three ring notebook, or a scrapbook full of news clippings, photos and cryptic messages.
Here are a few of the names genealogists will likely recognize: Degory Priest, a Pilgrim, one of the first to die after the Mayflower landing in the new world, Francis Combs [or, Coombs] and Deborah [or, Coombs], and Olive Harvey, known in the family for her part at the Battle of Bunker Hill during the Revolutionary War.
The ancestors of Raymond Powers McAlister (Ray) and Minnie Gay Humble McAlister (Gay) share a rich history that encompasses passage on the Mayflower, participation in the American Revolutionary War and the American Civil War. The account that follows encompasses the 16th century forward. This history and genealogy begins with eight family groups. Each family group is divided into sub-sections representing paternal and maternal links. If your genealogy includes the surnames McAlister, Steinmetz, Brittain, Powers, Humble, Gibbs, Keller or Perkins, plus a number of other surnames, you may find connections to your own history here.
The forefathers and mothers of these families left their homes on one side of the Atlantic Ocean to come west to the eastern seaboard of America. Subsequent generations journeyed to what is now the Midwestern United States. Intrepid homesteaders picked up roots again to build lives anew in Montana and Wyoming. The lure of the west coast captured the hearts of yet another generation who settled in Oregon, Washington and California.
A few important notes need to be interjected. One, the author is not a genealogist. Secondly, the spellings within this history and genealogy are varied and not standardized. Since geography is important to the family history, when the spelling can be reasonably linked to a known location or person, it will be followed with ‘[or Name].’ Repetitions are the result of the author having transcribed data from a myriad of family artifacts and documents. Lastly, as language and society evolve over centuries, references change. The author, whose personal sensibilities are jolted by some of the word and phrase choices of ancestors, has included documents as they were written without editing.
Note: the following have been transcribed by Mary A. Schultz from earlier documents
The first family group is that of Glenn McAlister, father of Raymond Powers McAlister. The spelling of the given name Glenn in various historic documents is either Glen or Glenn. For purposes of this account, the most prevalent spelling, Glenn, has been chosen.
Paternal Links for Glenn McAlister —The James McAlister Family
The father of Raymond Powers McAlister was Glenn McAlister, son of James McAlister and Ruth Lovitt McAlister. The James McAlister family represents one group.
Maternal Links for Glenn McAlister —The Steinmetz Family
Ruth Lovitt McAlister was the mother of Glenn McAlister. She is descended from the Steinmetz family, and the Steinmetz history included here represents the second family group.
The next family group is that of Beatrix Powers McAlister, mother of Ray McAlister
Paternal Links for Beatrix Powers McAlister —The Thomas Amarin Powers Family
The mother of Raymond Powers McAlister was Beatrix Powers McAlister, daughter of Thomas Amarin Powers and Millie Brittain Powers. Millie was probably named for her mother Emelia. The Powers family group is the third group contained here.
Maternal Links Beatrix Powers McAlister —The Brittain Family
Millie Brittain Powers, mother of Beatrix Powers McAlister, is descended from the Brittain family. The Brittains represent the fourth family group documented here.
The histories of the Powers and Brittain families have been excerpted from Powers Family Genealogy: Ancestors and Descendants of Wiram Powers and Connection to the Mayflower, By Philip Phineas Powers, First Edition.
To follow is the family group of Craig Denver Humble, father of Gay McAlister
Paternal Links for Craig Denver Humble — The Alexander Fisherman Humble Family
The father of Gay McAlister was Craig Denver Humble, son of Alexander Fisherman Humble and Margaret Priscilla Gibbs Humble. Maternal Links— The Margaret Priscilla Gibbs Family
Maternal Links for Craig Denver Humble — Margaret Priscilla Gibbs Humble, mother of Craig Denver Humble, was the daughter of Bill Gibbs and Margaret Gibbs.
The Humble and Gibbs family groups are combined in one section.
Another of the family groups explored is that of Maggie May [or Mae] Keller Humble, daughter of Daniel Webster Keller and Julia Perkins Keller
Paternal Links for Maggie May [or Mae] Keller Humble —The Keller Family
The father of Maggie Mae Keller Humble was Daniel Webster Keller. The Keller family represents the seventh family group in this account.
Maternal Links for Maggie May [or Mae] Keller Humble —The Perkins Family
The mother of Maggie Mae Keller Humble was Julia Perkins. The Perkins family represents the eighth family group.
Chapter 1
The James McAlister Family
The father of Raymond Powers McAlister was Glenn McAlister, son of James McAlister and Ruth Lovitt McAlister. The James McAlister family represents one group.
