    Chapter One

    1897, New York

    Adryanna wore a peach silk evening dress embroidered with flowers, and she had a beaded reticule to match, both fashioned by her favorite English designer. Bram strode at her side in his formal black clay diagonal, satin lined of course, and a top hat to finish off the outfit.

    They arrived at Fifth Avenue and 33rd Street where John Jacob Astor IV just opened his seventeen-story Astoria Hotel adjacent to the Waldorf, and a corridor connected the two buildings. The Waldorf-Astoria was a site to see, and arguably the finest hotel in New York, if anyone cared to ask Bram. With all its finery, the hotel also offered French dining, which was said to be the best there was to offer. The menu presented quite a selection from soups and salads to seafood, meats, and game. He heard they also served fresh fruit and delectable desserts. All decadent and lovely if one happened to be human, but Adryanna and Bram weren't interested in the cuisine, since blood seemed to
