About this ebook

Destiny is a Double-Edged Sword

Breyik has made it this far in the Devicing world on the strength of his parents' legacy, but now he has to live up to it.

In the Irongate Kingdom, Devicing is everything, just don't call it magic. Selected apprentices go on to futures of glory, creating new and powerful artifacts for the wealth and future of the isolated, underground lands.

Breyik's parents were the greatest Devicers in history - the King said so, himself. Made apprentice underage by Master Takkri, his parents' own teacher, Apprentice Breyik must earn promotion to Journeyman, the first true step to becoming a Master in his own right.

Now is his moment.

He has studied the Journeyman Projects of the past. He has secretly researched skills beyond what any apprentice ought to know. He has put it all on display for Master Takkri's judgement and left nothing to change.

But there's one thing he forgot to research: The Master, himself.

When Master Takkri flips Breyik's understanding of Devicing on its head, his promotion and his family legacy are at stake. The outcome will shape the future of not just a single apprentice, but all of Tal Deorai.

Lose Yourself, but Not Your Family

Breyik the Apprentice is an epic fantasy novelette. That means rich but tight world-building, a unique magic (no, wait, can't use that word: Devicing) system and characters whose actions and decisions could shatter or shape societies. But it's also relatively short.

If you're like me, you can get lost in a story for hours at a time. You might forget to sleep, eat, or acknowledge the existence of other human beings (or kobi). Well, with Breyik the Apprentice, you can do that safely. It's a short read that will introduce you to Breyik and the Irongate Kingdom of Tal Deorai, but also let you finish by dinner time, or the end of your flight.

And this is just a beginning. The next Breyik novel - a full-length novel that may just put your relationships at risk - is already in progress. If you join the reader's club at the end, you'll be the first to know when it's ready.

    Chapter 1

Master, it’s ready, Breyik savored the words as the stone door slid shut behind him. Finally. Three months of skipping meals and cheating on sleep were at an end. It all came down to these next few minutes. Not that he had left any room for doubt of the outcome. All it took was a simple Device to pass the examination and Breyik wasn’t aiming just to pass.

Your Journeyman Project? Master Takkri asked, his voice carrying from the far side of the workroom. Come forward.

Master Takkri had closed all the lightshafts except where he was sitting and Breyik could barely see him behind sentinel rows of shadow-laden devices. Armor, stone presses, and adaman statues loomed from benches and shelves, seeming to watch him as he wheeled his Focus Caster forward to join them. Beyond them, Master Takkri perched on a stool in a pool of red-orange firelight, literally a beacon at the end of Breyik’s long tunnel.

The Master sat in front of the largest workbench in the room, a slab of blackrock smoothed with adaman. It was easily twice as long as any other table and, unlike the other, almost cluttered surfaces, it was bare except for two objects. On one corner was a long roll of dragonhide cloth around a metal core, probably a component for some Device, and directly behind the master was a half-sphere of swirled jade and blackrock that looked more like a pottery washbowl than anything else. The top edge was rough, incomplete and there was a pair of loose onyx focuses beside it.

Just a bowl. A project for a friend, Master Takkri said quickly, following Breyik’s gaze. The master wore his full dragonhide suit, down to the gloves and mask tilted up on his head. It wasn’t real dragon, of course, just treated rockworm skin. But rockworms were close enough to dragons in ferocity and toughness, and Breyik coveted a suit of hide - a Master’s right - more than anything else. It was strong enough to protect the wearer from a blast, or a Device activation gone wrong. Of course, it was bulky and unnecessarily inconvenient for working on something as simple as pottery, but once Breyik earned his suit, he planned to wear it all the time, too. For now, he had only his apprentice’s apron, borrowed and too large for him since he hadn’t filled out yet. In a few minutes, though, he’d earn a journeyman’s coat. He could practically feel it on his arms already.

Master, I’ve brought my Project, Breyik repeated, eager to get started. I call it the Focus Caster. It’s ready for approval.

Are you? He stepped forward, but instead of examining the Focus Caster, he stared at Breyik. Master Takkri was 72, middle-aged for most Kobi, but ancient for a Devicer. Although they were the same height, he still managed to look down at Breyik from the pedestal of his five extra decades of experience and authority. You look tired, Breyik, and it is five turns past nightbell. You should come back tomorrow.

No! I mean, If you don’t mind, I’d like to do it now, please. I don’t think I could sleep anyway. He didn’t like sounding desperate, but it was true. He would sleep better as a confirmed Journeyman.

There is no rushing in Devicing. It gets us nowhere and can cause a great deal of harm. But, if you’re sure. Master Takkri shrugged and paced around the Focus Caster, scanning it, but not getting any closer. The Device was a hand-width high and wide, and an arm-span long. With a frame of beaten adaman, it was shining white and sleek from the intake slide to the output bin. Only two discharge trays, like round feet on either side, interrupted its form. Breyik hadn’t rushed, not in any step of the design or creation. If anything, it had been painfully slow. But tonight was just an evaluation, a formality. He focused on the Master’s eyes, looking for some sign of emotion - preferably awe, or at least approval, but all he got was shadows and a guarded expression. By the time Master Takkri got halfway around in his silent examination, Breyik couldn’t take any more.

"It can create any known gemstone focus, in any size,
