About this ebook

This book contains proven steps and strategies on how to beat diabetes and keep your glucose levels to normal.

Diabetes or diabetes mellitus (DM) is a group of diseases which cause high blood sugar levels over a prolonged time period. There are various symptoms which are associated with diabetes, such as increased thirst, frequent urination and increased hunger. If the diabetes is left un attended, it may lead to tons of complications such as stroke, cardiovascular disease, kidney problems and damage to the eyes. In acute conditions diabetes cause diabetes ketoacidosis and non ketotic hyperosmolar coma.

The incidences of Diabetes mellitus have been consistently increasing. This trend is said to be a consequence of widespread consumption of processed and sweetened products, too much patronization of fast foods, and technologies that promote less physical activity. DM could be attributed to many factors, including a sedentary lifestyle and non-balanced diet, both of which can lead to hyperglycemia, the main feature of the disease. These factors are now the targets of DM treatment, which includes both non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic modalities. The former focuses on lifestyle modification, while the latter is concerned about providing and augmenting release of insulin, the hormone that is mainly involved in DM. How these treatment modalities can lower one’s blood sugar level is discussed in this book.

Diabetes Diet Plan - Annie Ramsey

    Introduction

Diabetes is caused when either the pancreas isn’t producing enough insulin or our body cells aren’t responding to the insulin produced in our body.

There are 3 types of diabetes:

Type 1 diabetes is when the body isn’t producing enough insulin. It’s also called as insulin dependent diabetes mellitus.

Type 2 diabetes is when body develops insulin resistance, a condition in which the cells are unable to respond to insulin correctly. It’s also known as non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. Its shows in old age and is caused by obesity and no exercise.

Gestational diabetes is caused in pregnant women who develop a very high blood glucose level.

Diabetes is classified into type 1, type 2, gestational and other types. The other types are rare diabetic conditions when there are only a few dozen of cases.

Type 1 DM- type 1 diabetes is caused by an insulin deficiency in pancreas. A majority of type 1 diabetes is caused when the T-cell mediates autoimmune attack leads to a loss of beta cells and therefore insulin. The cause of type 1 diabetes is relatively unknown and is sometimes referred to as genetic. It can affect children and adults alike but more children cases have been observed.

Type 2 DM- this type is caused when the body develops an insulin resistance along with reduced insulin secretion by the pancreas. In early stages, there’s an abnormal insulin sensitivity in the body which may be controlled by medications to improve insulin sensitivity or by reducing production of glucose in liver. Type 2 on contrary to the type 1 is primarily caused because of lifestyle of a person and also genetics. Major causes include obesity, lack of exercise, poor diet and stress. Consumption of a lot of sugar via sweets or aerated drinks are associated with diabetes. Also an increased consumption of fats like saturated fats and Trans fatty acids increase the risk of having type 2 debates.

Gestational diabetes-this is caused by a combination of reduced insulin secretion along with an inadequate responsiveness. It occurs in pregnancies and may improve or disappear on delivery. Gestational diabetes is completely treatable but needs a careful medical supervision throughout the pregnancy. Unattended gestational diabetes is harmful both to the baby and the mother. It may cause the diabetes to stay in mother and baby and also cause various baby complications such as high birth weight, cardiac problems and nervous anomalies.

Prevention of diabetes involves a lifestyle change and taking anti-diabetic medications. We must consume nutritious food and maintain a normal boy weight and a daily exercise. As diabetes is also related to genes, there are various medications to prevent diabetes from happening. A routine aspirin usage is said to help in diabetes prevention. Type 1 DM is treated with a combination of NPH insulin. Blood pressure must be kept in normality to prevent diabetes and thus blood pressure medication is also recommended.

    Chapter 1: Diabetes Mellitus

Glucose is the main energy source of the body. It is metabolized into various products through several processes to yield ATP or adenosine triphosphate, the main energy currency of the body. However, too much of anything is dangerous. Excessive glucose levels in the blood will surely take its toll on the cells and cause diseases, the most common of which is diabetes mellitus.

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that is considered as one of the many modifiable diseases, together with hypertension. A modifiable type of disease is a disorder that could have been prevented through adoption of a healthy lifestyle. Eating a balanced diet, exercising routinely, and quitting smoking are just some of the factors that make up a healthy lifestyle. Failure to do any of these factors may lead to a state of imbalance that can eventually cause disease.

DM is a syndrome of metabolic illnesses that all have one thing in common—hyperglycemia. Most symptoms and complications of this disease can be greatly attributed to an increase in blood glucose levels. Knowing how diabetes develops and recognizing the signs and symptoms that it can manifest in an individual are important steps towards control and prevention of this disease.

    How does DM develop?

The main culprit in this disease is too much intake of carbohydrate-rich foods. Rice, pasta, bread, cakes, cookies, pancakes, and anything sweetened are just some of them. The development of DM can also be attributed to a decrease in the utilization of glucose such that sugar
