Reviews for King & Kayla and the Case of the Secret Code
15 ratings2 reviews
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5King and his human Kayla apply their problem-solving skills to help Thor and his human when Thor is accused of messing up the neighbor's yard. In addition to being a great transitional reader and highly entertaining, this story looks at the concept of list-making as a tool to work out ideas and think things through. It is a charming and adorable early reader mystery that is both funny and clever. Suitable for ages 7 to 9.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Kayla, a golden retriever, is out walking with his human, Kayla, when they learn that a puppy named Thor is accused of wrecking a neighbor's yard. While Thor might be energetically rambunctious, this doesn't seem like his handiwork. Can they find out the real culprit? This is another title in an ongoing series. While it still has most of the charm of the other titles, it's starting to feel a little too formulaic for me. The young readers who are the target audience probably won't mind the repetition, so that's not a criticism per se, but I just wasn't feeling it this time. This book also seemed to introduce several new characters at once, which again isn't a problem, just an observation.Short chapters make this title an ideal bridge between less wordy early readers and longer chapter books. Young readers are introduced to the mystery genre and logical thinking to find solutions. This includes both King and his dog pals’ way of finding the culprit and Kayla and her human friends’ ways of clearing Thor’s name. The illustrations fit the text well.
