Introduction
Harmonie State Park combines history, outdoor recreation and stunning river vistas to provide a wonderful family friendly vacation spot.
Its location on the banks of the lovely Wabash River provides a wonderful place for fishing and boating on its waters. Trails and picnic tables line its bank and an access ramp allows boaters to lower their watercraft into the river. The picnic area is a wonderful place to watch stunning sunsets over the river.
Harmonie State Park also has a campground with electric sites and family cabins for visitors to extend their stay. Several of the 200 campsites are ADA accessible as are two of the cabins.
Hikers have a multitude of trails to hike that offer a variety of hiking experiences. Mountain bike and horse trails add to the diversity of the outdoor experience.
An Interpretive Naturalist Service and Nature Center round out the amenities found at Harmonie State Park.
History buffs will enjoy nearby Historic New Harmony. This fascinating village provides a unique look into two experiments in communal living. Both occurred early in Indiana history here, in New Harmony. The Rappites and Harmonites both tried to establish communal living at New Harmony. Neither community succeeded in doing this. However, they left behind a fascinating story, architecture and community that survives for people to study and enjoy.
A visit to Harmonie State Park will provide the visitor with plenty of history and recreation to fill a wonderful vacation.
Harmonie State Park - On the Banks of the Wabash River
May 11, 2014
Our spring vacation was to Harmony State Park near New Harmony, Indiana. Our route followed US Route 50 from North Vernon, Indiana to Shoals, Indiana. I had forgotten the map and at Shoals, I took the wrong highway. I should have taken US 231 at Loogootee, which is a few miles further west. Instead, I turned on US 150 back east towards French Lick, Indiana. I knew I was going the wrong way after a few minutes, but it was a nice day and we were not in any hurry, so I kept going.
Our route through the rural Indiana countryside covered Indiana State Road 56 to US 231. We followed this highway south through Jasper and Huntingburg, Indiana. A few miles below Huntingburg US 231 intersects Interstate 64, which we took west to Exit 4, Indiana State Road 69. This highway flows south. At Indiana State Road 269, we turned right, into Harmony State Park. We had left home about 11:30 and arrived at our cabin by 5:00.
Harmony State Park Family Cabins
The family cabins at Harmony are affordable, clean and comfortable. They include a kitchen, bathroom, two bedrooms, a porch and sitting area. There is no television or wireless internet. A wireless internet connection is available at the park office, about a five-minute drive. You may park in the parking lot and get a decent signal anytime day or night.
After spending an hour or so setting the cabin up and unpacking, we moseyed down to a picnic area by the Wabash River. We enjoyed a picnic lunch as we spent a relaxing evening watching the sunset over the river.

New Harmony State Park - Hiking Trail Five
Great Day for a State Park Hike
Monday dawned bright, beautiful and humid. We decided to spend the morning hiking. Trail Five, around Big Harmony Pond. The pond is close to the cabins. The trail is a moderate one that circles the pond with a section through forestland. This loop trail is a moderate 1.5 miles long. There are several small wooden platforms around the pond for fishing or just looking at the water.
Big Harmony Pond is not large, but it is quite pretty. The forest tickles its edges while ducks and other waterfowl ply its surface. We didn't see any white tailed deer, but discerned their tracks as they approached the water's edge to slurp from the quiet water. After a relaxing hike around the lake, we retired to the cabin to eat
