Check Engine Light Evolution - Michael Camino

    Road

    Foreward

I have always been passionate about a few things. Teaching is one of those passions. I loved how once I taught someone a new skill, It had more than a monetary value. This new skill was something that could be used multiple times and passed on. I came very close to pursuing my dream of becoming a teacher. I had no idea what subject I would teach, but I knew I would be fulfilled by teaching and be able to enrich peoples lives in some way. When I was 18 years old, I was working at a communications company part time. The money was good and I enjoyed the job, but I decided that I should pursue teaching instead. I quickly enrolled in my local college and within a few weeks, I was on my way to becoming a teacher.

About two days prior to moving into the dorm, my boss at the communications company approached me about a full time position that had just become available. I had been very good at my part time position so far and the new position was just a full time extension of what I usually do, with a few added benefits. The company was just acquired by a larger communications giant and this was a huge opportunity with lot of cash being thrown around. At 18 years old, I would find myself making more than my parents were at the time and still have a huge possibility for corporate advancement. I figured that even if I took the windfall of cash now I could always go back to college, so I accepted the offer and the money. It worked out well for a few years and when my run was over, I eventually transitioned into an opportunity in the automotive service industry.

This was the first time I had the opportunity to see a totally different corporate structure and be exposed to an industry that is usually considered to be a challenging environment. That would be putting it lightly. Over the years, I learned the intricacies of the industry and its secrets. I learned things that amazed me and others that absolutely disgusted me. I came to the conclusion that if all of the people who walked into these authorized and independent dealers were just a little more educated, it may level the playing field. I could not believe how much money was thrown around and wasted due to a lack of education by the consumer. I have seen very few people who have entered the doors that are not oblivious to exactly what needs to be done and how much something should cost. This occurs on the sales and service side of the operation, so there is truly no area that is not waiting to separate you from your wallet.

I have seen Salespeople brag about how much commission they made by moving a few numbers during the initial sales banter. I have seen Finance Managers making six figure incomes for selling products of little value. I have seen Finance Managers choosing lenders that are awful for the consumer, but pay great commission. Independent Sales lots that sell warranties on every vehicle on the lot, but turn out to cover nothing when repairs are needed. Vehicles in need of repairs that exceed the value of the vehicle and leaving the owner upside down on the loan because it was never inspected before purchase. The list can get as greasy as you can imagine. This is where my desire to teach became overwhelming.

After years in the industry, I am here to be your advocate on what is right and what is total garbage. I am here to tell you what is totally shady and what may be a good investment for you. I will try to break it up into sections and analyze each step as we go, Identifying what is your best move and what to stay clear of. I will try to help you through the fog of number shuffling, and when its time to call a recommended service total bullshit. This may be the reason I get to be your teacher and advisor now. I believe that empowering people with knowledge is the best gift you can give someone because it is something that can be passed on and increases in value.

I don’t want to give you the impression that all Dealerships and Sales Lots are shady acres. Most are running a fair establishment and are on the up and up. Some places may be five star rated and highly recommended. Others are just business disguised under five star ratings that only excel at dipping into your wallet. I will try to help you see past the signs and marketing so that you can make informed decisions that will be based on a 360-degree view of your situation. I hope you enjoy the ability to finally see what you have been missing behind the curtain.

This book is aimed to teach you about what you need to be aware of during the sales and service process. The benefit that will come from everything you learn will be all the money, time and frustration you will save yourself. While you may not seem to find a benefit in one section right now, you may find it useful later. Keep this book in your collection and refer to it whenever you think it might help. I am positive that some of the information you apply in this book will easily repay the cost of this book and then some. I want to thank you for picking this book up and showing interest. If you are anything like me, you are always curious about what is behind the curtain of the great and powerful wizards that are trying to separate you from your time and money. I believe you want to find out all of the tricks and turn them around in your favor. I believe you want to share all of that information with all of your friends and loved ones so they are protected and can be aware of these types of cloudy businesses. I want to teach you about how to know what is a good investment and how to stay frosty throughout every step of the negotiation stage.

Thank you for giving me something valuable to teach. Now, let’s get to it!

Do Your Homework Before, Not After.

I could often tell how a first visit in a Service Department will go when I hear the words I got a great deal on it!. Every single time I have heard that phrase spoken, it is like the Automotive Angel of Doom walks into the shop and infects the vehicle with as many hidden car cancers as possible.

I have seen almost everything. I say almost, because I am sure I will see something in the future that will make me shake my head in disbelief. I have seen floorboards rusted out and covered up by Brand New OEM Carpeting in a Newly Restored Avant Wagon. I have seen the engine in brand new vehicle literally explode internally within hours of leaving a dealership lot. I have seen cars that would never pass a state safety inspection under any circumstance becoming the pride and joy of a teenager who is so proud they got the chance to purchase a luxury German automobile with all of their graduation money.

This is the critical point in the lovely experience of Automobile ownership. This is where a little bit of research and effort can really pay off. There have been many times I have worked in the Service Department and I have given the Terminal diagnosis to someone who brought their newly acquired vehicle in for an innocent diagnosis. First, there is the look of disbelief. How can THIS be wrong with a car I JUST bought? Second, the denial kicks in. YOU have to be wrong. YOU just want to rip me off. Third, Panic (which comes in many forms). How can I pay for this? I still owe all this money for this car that won’t even run! I will admit, it is absolutely terrible to watch and I did not like being messenger one bit. So, let’s backup a bit.

Prior to your decision to purchase a New or Used car is when you are in complete control. You are in the safest position you can possibly be in. You basically have the keys to see into the future by simply researching the past. Once you decide on exactly the vehicle you want to invest in, you need to get obsessive. You need to research every aspect of this car. The intense effort right now will pay off. I promise. What if I told you the vehicle of your dreams had a part in the engine that needed to be changed every 35,000 miles and the cost was $1500.00? If you don’t replace the part, the insides of the engine would crush like a tin can and leave you stranded at the worst time you could possibly imagine. Guess what? Better figure that into your cost of ownership. Get
