About this ebook
Em is confused about a lot of things: who she is, what she wants, how she's going to pass Alchemy when she's terrible at it. The one thing she's not confused about? Her desire to buy her best friend (and college roommate) the best birthday present ever. Luckily the local magic supply shop is hiring.
Her plan to get a job there would be working perfectly if not for her coworker Phineas who is in turns aggravating and endearingly awkward. She's not sure if she wants to date him or wants to be him. The more time they spend together the more she thinks it may be both.
Help Wanted is an 18,000 word novella with a gender questioning and questioning asexual f/m romance. It is the first in a new series about students at a contemporary magic college.
J. Emery
J. Emery is slowly writing their way through every fantasy trope imaginable. And if they can make it weirder and queerer while they do, that’s even better as far as they’re concerned. They spend their free time gaming, working on their cosplay creating skills, and drinking large quantities of tea, occasionally all at the same time. They have also been known to document their ridiculous levels of terror while watching horror movies on twitter as @mixeduppainter. Sometimes they even discuss upcoming projects. They have also written and self-published two queer short stories: An Offering of Plums and Help Wanted.

Ishould be on my way out the door but I'm here instead, staring into a mirror, with the acid taste of panic on my tongue as I repeat the words of the incantation. My reflection blurs until I can barely tell what I'm looking at anymore. It's not me. But it's not anything else either. The mirror has turned a blank, depthless grey. My reflection is gone and nothingness has taken its place.
It's sort of a relief.
Then the door slams open and I scream as my concentration shatters, the spell shatters, and the mirror gives a worrying ripple like it's considering shattering too. Luckily it doesn't crack, which is good because mirrors are expensive and I am very broke.
My roommate, Thaian, the source of the spell-breaking noise, stands in the doorway, looking between me and the mirror. What are you doing?
She raises a dark eyebrow. Thaian looks soft and rounded, soft shoulders, soft stomach, soft cloud of black hair pulled back into a knot. Her brown cheeks dimple when she smiles. Doesn't matter though. She would still kick my ass if she had to because that's what friends are for. There's also no use lying to her, since she lives here. She'll notice eventually. I haven't successfully kept a secret from her since we became friends in high school. She's my own personal lie detector.
Practicing.
I fold my arms over my chest and my reflection copies the gesture. Mocking me. My reflection has the same slight frown and slightly too-long dark hair that I do, but no matter how many times I look at myself lately it's like looking at someone else. Not a stranger. More like someone who used to be a friend until we outgrew each other.
Thaian's eyes light up with understanding. Ohhhh. That speaking spell from last week? Is it still giving you trouble?
Yeah, that one.
I glare into my own deep brown eyes. I look angry. I suppose that's better than looking completely defeated, which is how I feel. "Why can't I get this?" If mirrors had necks, I would be strangling this one by now.
I turn away from my reflection.
Instead of answering, Thaian grabs me by the shoulders and steers me toward the door. I don't know, but making faces at the mirror isn't gonna help. It's dinner time and you're a beast when you're hungry. I'm not dealing with that tonight.
She slams the door behind us. I think they have that awful vegetable casserole that you like too,
she adds. Slyly.
Fine. You've convinced me. But after dinner I'm kicking that mirror's ass.
Sure you are, Em. Sure you are.
THEY DO INDEED HAVE the vegetable casserole. I can smell it the second we walk into the dining hall. I suck in a lungful of the delicious stink of cruciferous vegetables. No matter what its many detractors claim, the vegetable casserole is amazing and without its help I probably would have starved before I made it to the second semester. The dining hall doesn't always make it easy to be a vegetarian.
I attract a number of stares as I navigate the room with my double helping of casserole and seat myself at a table beside the window. Outside the sun is long gone and the sky is a blank slate of deep blue with the brightly lit room overlaying it.
Leo appears a minute later, tray covered in an assortment of small food items that will inevitably be squirrelled away into pockets for later eating. I'd be willing to bet he's got a month's supply of snacks stashed in his room by now, ready in case of natural disaster or last minute paper writing marathons. Leo has a perpetually sleepy look, barely hidden by his glasses, and the build of a praying mantis. But one with pretty great hair. I admit I'm a little jealous of that part. He nods to me as he pulls up a chair. Emilia.
I nod back at the sound of my name and salute him with my fork. In the name of friendship, I ignore the look he shoots my casserole. He knows better than to say anything outright.
We lapse into companionable silence while I mentally rehash everything I tried with the mirror earlier. It's not a particularly difficult spell, but it takes a lot of focus, especially if I want to bind it to the mirror permanently. Focus, the one thing I don't have much of. I thought I almost had the spell this time, but the ease with which it broke at Thaian's interruption suggests I'm only fooling myself.
And I need to get this spell down. My grade depends on it, for one thing. Also there's the small matter of how I'm relying on learning that spell so I can make Thaian's birthday present. There's only one thing that can top what I gave her last year and my grand plan had been to make it myself and really wow her. I can't fail on this. That's twice the failing if I do. One way or another, the damn mirror is happening.
Thaian reappears with Sonia trailing in her wake like a quiet pastel cloud. Thaian has always been the hub of our group and we her humble spokes. It's an arrangement that seems to
