About this ebook

Acupuncture practiced in China since time immemorial has in recent years become widely known the world over and acupuncture treatment is now obtainable outside China almost everywhere.
The general experience gained from acupuncture treatment in recent years however, has often not been satisfactory, which has lead to the widespread, but incorrect view that acupuncture sometimes works, but often not and the misguided idea has spread that acupuncture is suitable only for the treatment of physical pains. There are of course reasons for these mistaken views.
It is ignorance of the acupuncture rules, which are indispensable for successful treatment that causes failure. These rules were laid down in the Huang-ti Nei ching of the legendary Yellow Emperor (about 2700 BC).
The book explains the secrets of these rules for successful acupuncture treatment which the author has researched and practiced for more than 50 years and demonstrates how to apply them.

The Five Elements and Other Essential Rules in Acupuncture Treatment - Ulrich Wilhelm Lippelt

The Five Elements in Acupuncture And other Essential Rules For successful Acupuncture Treatment

Acupuncture practiced in China since time immemorial has in recent years become widely known the world over and acupuncture treatment is now obtainable outside China almost everywhere. The present worldwide trend for a more natural way of healing is in favour with an increasing number of people, who have experienced the shortcomings of allopathic medicine when suffering from diseases resisting conventional treatment. This has caused many to search for alternatives such as Chinese Acupuncture, the Indian Ayurveda and many other traditional and new ways of treatment.

The general experience gained from acupuncture treatment in recent years, has often not been satisfactory, which has lead to the widespread view that acupuncture sometimes works very well, but often not and a misguided belief has spread that acupuncture is suitable only for the treatment of physical pains. There are of course reasons for these mistaken views.

During the long history of the practice of acupuncture in China many practitioners inherited their skills and knowledge from their forefathers. It was and still is the tradition to keep their expertise in the family and it is passed on only to descendents or an occasional well-paying apprentice. These practitioners are experts in the treatment of certain diseases for which they have the experience collected by many generations. Most of them however do not have any knowledge of the indispensable rules of the acupuncture system which are based on the knowledge of change in the circulation of the life force (chi) due to time factors. There are of cause practitioners of acupuncture who know these rules, but either reject or ignore them saying that they are nothing but devices of the old masters to mystify the system to protect their own standing in society as respected masters. Such views are the fashion in present society, which is attracted by modernity. Ignorance of the acupuncture rules or their rejection as a hoax, are both very serious failings, which we cannot tolerate, since these rules are indispensable for effective treatment. In the Huang-ti Nei ching of the legendary Yellow Emperor (about 2700 BC) it is therefore said: An ordinary physician, who doesn’t know the basics of medicine, is not acquainted with the five elements and the live force (chi), is wasting his time, having no knowledge of how the cosmic changes are applied in medicine. He is clinging to prescriptions and is harming people.

    Two Methods of Treatment

Acupuncture knows two methods of treatment. They are The Treatment of the Branches and The Treatment of the Roots. The treatment of the branches is in most cases what is done by practitioners. They are using a wide selection of points, which may also include some of the element points, but mostly points other than the element points. Their diagnosis and treatment is based on the collected experience of many generations. The treatment of the branches is comparable to treating the branches of a tree to remove some of the symptoms and is often quite effective for minor ailments. The many different lists of points recommended for the treatment of certain diseases, which are found in ancient and contemporary publications on acupuncture, belong to the system of the treatment of the branches. The treatment of the roots aims to cure by harmonising the energy of the organs responsible for a disease. The diagnosis and treatment are both based on the interaction of the five elements. A good understanding of the five elements and their interaction in the human body is therefore essential for it. By harmonising the energy of the effected organs, the cause of a disease is removed and health is established again. The points treated are all the so-called element points.

    Treatment of the Branches

The treatment of the branches uses, apart of an occasional element point, any of the other points selected according to their known indication. The knowledge of their specific curative action is mostly held secret. Practitioners generally are highly specialized, but usually have only knowledge for the treatment of some specific ailments.

Except for an occasional element point all the other points used in the treatment of the branches are not subject to any rules. Points of the yang meridian can be treated successfully on yin days and at yin times although they produce better results on yang days at yang times. The same applies to the yin acupuncture points. The effect of treating them is not very lasting, but suffices for the correction of minor ailments, which after all are most of the diseases. In cases when such points are incorrectly selected and treated, no noticeable harm is observed.

While the treatment of the roots is said to cure the most serious, chronic and life-threatening diseases, the treatment of the branches is suitable only for minor illnesses.

    Treatment of the Roots

The treatment of the roots is the treatment of the element points, which are 60 in number. They regulate the energy in the interaction of the five elements and could be described as being the switchboard of the life-force. These points are most powerful and can cure all diseases, but when incorrectly selected for treatment can cause great harm and loss of health. In treating the element points rules have to be observed. These rules mainly deal with the regular change of yin and yang hours and days and with situations when the element point indicated for an ailment cannot be used, because of conflicting yin/yang time factors. Some of the rules are concerned with the combinations of the so-called 12 earthly branches and the 10 heavenly stems which are changing in time in an orderly fashion as shown in the Chinese lunar calendar. To have knowledge of these rules is essential for acupuncture treatment of the element points.

The 60 Element Points and their Rules

The element points are the very heart of the acupuncture system controlling and regulating the life force. Interacting in the formation of the five elements they are responsible for illness and health.

The treatment of the element points has to be in harmony with all recurring changes in nature. Special rules have been worked out to govern their treatment under certain conditions to take care of their interconnected position in
