About this ebook

Meet Anna Wood, an eight-year-old girl living on a farm in the beautiful Willamette Valley of Oregon. She loves all the animals on the farm, but she has a special fascination for the hens and their chicks. There is one hen in particular, Old Fussy Hen, that Anna is afraid of. She wants to hold a chick badly enough to make a decision that alters her life and the life of a chick. She finds herself lying when she knows she should tell the truth.

This early chapter book, Anna's Decision, shows how making unwise, spur-of-the-moment decisions can change someones life. It portrays a family working together to encourage Anna through problem-solving, love, and understanding. Anna learns that telling the truth is the only way to go. She finds out that God performs miracles and works all things together for good to those who love Him (Romans 8:28).

    Helping Grandma

Anna Wood ran out of her bedroom and down the stairs to the kitchen. No school, hurray, she shouted. It was finally summer time, and she would be turning nine in a few weeks. Her emerald green eyes sparkled as she looked out the kitchen window. The dazzling purple and blue hues in the distant mountains surrounding their farm in the Willamette Valley took her breath away. The sky was baby blue. Birds soared high above the treetops as if the wind were carrying them. Anna touched the window with her nose to feel how warm the sun had made the window pane. She loved living on the farm where she could run and play. She especially loved the animals and helping Grandma. She spent most of her time at the barn or at Grandma’s house.

    Anna, Mom called.

Anna hurried to the table and sat in her chair across from Dad, who was folding the newspaper.

Good morning, Anna. Did you sleep well? Dad asked.

Yes, after I cooled off enough to sleep. It’s too hot in my room. After a while a breeze came through my window, and then I dozed off.

I understand. Mom and I had the same problem, Dad said.

After the meal prayer, Anna gulped down her milk. She could hardly wait to get outside and help Grandma.

What’s your hurry, Anna? Mom asked.

I want to help Grandma feed the baby calves after Grandpa milks the cows. Anna shoveled in a mouthful of scrambled eggs.

Not so fast, my sweet daughter. Remember, it’s your turn to clear the table and help wash the dishes.

Aw, Mom, do I have to? I don’t want to do my chores, I want to help Grandma.

Anna folded her arms across her chest. She tossed her head, making her long, brown ponytail swish like a horse’s tail.

If you do your job quickly, without pouting, I’m sure you’ll still have time to help Grandma, Dad said.

Anna sat with a frown on her face and thought about Dad’s words. They didn’t make her feel any better. Her appetite was gone, she was angry, and she felt like crying. Clearing the table and washing dishes was boring. Grandma will probably be finished feeding the baby calves by the time I get out there, she mumbled.

What did you say? I didn’t hear you, Dad said.

    Nothing!
