- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5As far as self help books go this one is pretty good. The author is a successful owner of his own creative service business, and sometimes it's difficult to buy into his optimism when you consider how many people try and fail to strike out on similar ventures, but his advice is down to earth and uncompromising, and the passion he has for the work he's doing comes through clearly. There are a number of practical tidbits in his advice, but the real value comes from the mentality that he is trying to cultivate in his answers. The style is conversational, and the format is set up in the form of a question and answer session divided by stages of business, from starting out to giving back once you've made it. As I read it felt like I had a mentor sitting next to me, giving me his hard earned advice with no frills attached. I'm not going into the creative service business myself, but I was able to take something of value out of this book anyway. I'd call that a success.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Extremely helpful. I loaned it to a friend to help start his business. He can not thank me enough. It should work for any service industry.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Mr. Bailey's self-help book is definitely worth reading if you're a small business owner or aspire to be one in the near future. He focuses more on the creative aspects of business and provides some very interesting tips and advice. It seems to be a little repetitive, and one may be unsure if he's just running out of things to say or just tried to rush the book to finish it.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was sent to me as a Early Reviewer selection and I was thoroughly blown away by it! It may be because I am in a creative business, but this was so heartfelt and informative I literally could not put it down until I finished it. I wish there was something like this when I first started in my creative business, it would have saved me a lot of wasted time and energy. It covers in detail the whole industry starting with career selection, through working with clients, vendors, taxes, saving for the future and what to do when things go wrong. Wonderful book! I have a very few that I rely on, but this will be one!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Preston Bailey is the owner and one of the top event designers in the world. In this book he offers his guidance to others running a creative service business. The book is written in a advice-column format with the type of questions he is most commonly asked. I found the book to have very practice advice on a number of difficult business topic. One of the topics I and many others have is with is pricing. He offers a very practical pricing guidance on this topic. I really like how he gives advice to be creative, be true to your talent but also make sure you make a profit. It is very easy to undercharge and give too much to the deterrence of your business. This book is a must read for new and even individuals that have been running a creative service business for a while.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This book is a primer for creative types interested in running or improving their existing business. It is written by the successful event planner Preston Bailey. While not everyone agrees with his abundant style, his success if undeniable. He puts his suggestions and thoughts forth on a number of common challenges facing creative personalities in business in a question and answer format. While this doesn't make for the most complex read, it does allow him to properly hit home on his point of humanity and personality being the keys to success. He is able to write in train of thought style which lets his "business with our hearts" motto come to the forefront. I found the advice within to be interesting, heartfelt, and useful. Even non-creative types can take away several key pointers from the book. The actual business advice is fairly common and even commonsense most of the time but Preston really emphasizes the fact that it is about people, not business plans. Many over the chapters and questions as well as Bailey's answers overlap and repeat each other and their are several points that I would have liked to see Bailey expand on rather than relying completely on the emotional abstract but this is not a how-to guide rather than a successful businesspersons's philosophy. There are good lessons for everyone to take out of this book.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I REALLY enjoyed this book. While I am not a professional event planner or anything near that for my occupation, I do deal with the public and sell products rather than services. Clearly, Preston's years of experience with demographics of all types has taught him the consistency of sound values and good business practices. I someday hope to own my own business. This book is an outstanding primer for planning and preparing such a business. It gives good sound advice from practical experience. The letters from people who also were in the same business approach was creative, but it didn't impact me that much. Simply writing chapters on each topic would have worked equally as effective for me.Nice job overall.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Given the preponderance of big box stores it's nice to focus on the businesses that work for something other than the Bottom Line. I took a baking class recently. It was taught by a fifth generation owner. At one point the teacher/family business owner commented that she has been on the lookout for other businesses that stay true to quality over quantity, integrity over profit, pride over shortcuts. She's trying to learn what she can, improving her own business and helping others improve theirs. "Dear Preston" follows the same path, and is a wonderful reference for those of us who long for the days when you walked into a store and were greeted by name. Granted, some businesses still work that way, but they struggle against businesses that cut prices to gain quantity. I received this book through Early Reviewers. It's an inspiring book, and the word "Friendly" in the title says it all. Thank you, Preston, for remembering the people aspect of business.
