A Study Guide for Sherwood Anderson's "The Egg" - Gale

    The Egg

    Sherwood Anderson

    1920

    Introduction

Sherwood Anderson, the author of The Egg, is widely considered to be one of the masters of American fiction and, in particular, one of the great visionaries who first saw what could be done in the short story format. Among his admirers were such literary heavyweights as William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway, both of whom studied Anderson's style and sought his advice about writing. The stories that show off Anderson's revolutionary style include the ones that make up his classic 1919 collection Winesburg, Ohio and a few others, including The Egg, which was published in 1920, when he was at the height of his talent.

This tragicomic story involves a young man growing up in rural Ohio at the end of the nineteenth century. As his mother focuses on what it will take to make him a success in the world, his father struggles to make the family financially stable. They run a chicken farm, and the narrator explains in detail how being isolated on a farm with the chickens drives him to despise the stupid, frail creatures. When the family buys a diner near town, to give the boy a chance to attend school, the father convinces himself that he can bring in customers by being witty and entertaining. These are two traits that nothing in his life has prepared him for. He tries and fails at magic tricks, and his collection of deformed chickens, born with extra limbs or conjoined to other chicks and preserved in jars of alcohol, fail to provide the kind of dining experience he wants to be remembered for. Through it all, readers are left to wonder about the effect this odd man and his stubborn ways have had on his son.

The Egg was first published in the Dial magazine in 1920 before being included in Anderson's collection The Triumph of the Egg and Other Stories in 1921. It is a testament to Anderson's continuing reputation that that book is still in print nearly a hundred years later. The story is also available in The Portable Sherwood Anderson (1949) and online at http://www.eldritchpress.org/tales/egg.html
