    Introduction

Tony Romano's short story If You Eat, You Never Die is the title story of the twenty-four tales included in the 2009 collection If You Eat, You Never Die: Chicago Tales. Read together, the closely related stories depict three generations of the Comingo family, Italian immigrants living on the outskirts of Chicago during an unspecified era.

In the five pages of If You Eat, You Never Die, Romano brings to life the struggles and values of the Comingo family through themes of love, cultural conflict, and assimilation. By telling this particular story through the eyes of Lucia, matriarch of the Comingo clan, he uses authentic dialect and speech patterns to underscore the importance of control for Lucia—over her son in particular and her family in general. In an unfamiliar culture where daily life is a test of survival skills, Lucia worries that her boys—in this story, Jim—are being set adrift in a sea of values and morals she cannot understand and does not share.

In addition to the 2009 collection, If You Eat, You Never Die has been published in the Chicago Tribune and featured on National Public Radio's Sound of Writing.
