    Introduction

    Valzhyna Mort made her American debut with Factory of Tears, the first Belarusian-American publication in the United States. Grandmother, a poem in this collection, is a tribute to the poet's own grandmother, Janina, to whom the collection is dedicated. Mort's grandmother suffered through collectivization in Belarus during the Stalinist era.

    In Grandmother, Mort presents a compelling portrait of a grandmother, noting the elderly woman's positive values and suggesting through the imagery the suffering she has experienced. The speaker simultaneously recognizes the physical vulnerability of her grandmother as she ages. Through the use of figurative language, the speaker admires the strength of her grandmother's physical resolve yet questions a world—as well as God's presence in it—where such hardships occur. As a Blue Flower Arts review of Factory of Tears states, The music of lines and litanies of phrases mesmerize the reader, then sudden discord reminds us that Mort's world is not entirely harmonious.

    Women of two generations are juxtaposed in the poem, and the speaker is unable to reconcile the differences between the two. Ultimately, Grandmother reinforces the power of family. However, it also hints at the effects of historical events and religion in forming cultural and personal
