    Introduction

B.Wordsworth is a short story by V. S. Naipaul that was first published as part of the novel Miguel Street in 1959. The book, which is a collection of interrelated stories, is available in a Vintage edition published in 2002.

Naipaul is one of the most widely read and respected writers in the world, and this story was one of the first he wrote. Of Indian descent, he grew up in Trinidad, spending some of his childhood in Port of Spain, the capital city. Trinidad was a British colony at the time. In the fictional stories in Miguel Street, Naipaul draws on his memories of the people he grew up with, who were also Trinidadian of Indian ancestry. B. Wordsworth is therefore set in Trinidad in the 1940s. Naipaul would have been about ten years old at the time, and the story is told by an unnamed boy of about that age. The boy encounters and becomes friends with an older man named B. Wordsworth who likes to think of himself as a poet, and is so named after the great English poet, William Wordsworth.

    B. Wordsworth is a story of friendship between a fatherless boy and a sympathetic adult. It reveals much about life in the poorer areas of Port of Spain during this period, and it also raises the question of what it means to be or try to become a poet. The story is an accessible example of Naipaul's early work and also an introduction to West Indian literature, which first began to make an impact beyond its borders in the 1950s.

His father was a journalist. In Naipaul's early years, the family moved around a lot, but in 1938, they settled in Port of Spain for several years. Naipaul recalled this as a peaceful time during his mostly unsettled childhood, and it was his
