    FOREWORD

    Written by Nadège René

I first met S. Akande on the second floor of the apartment block we both live in. He took in a parcel of mine when I missed its delivery. He struck me as mysterious, aloof and fiery. Shortly after, he would write a piece for my own book declaring love to be the strongest painkiller. In conversation we would tread the philosophical terrains of love and art, mysticism and romanticism. We would eat and laugh and mostly disagree. Yet I have found Candid Revelations to be a book that reveals itself in the likeness of its author. Soft and sharp-edged, yet frank, sensitive and always, always piercing with insight.

I met with Sam one day in July to read his work. I was gripped by sexy barbershop small talk, coffee shop slip ups and lively, seductive interpretations of love. As I spoke with Sam about what it took for him to create the book and as I read more of the book I realised that beneath the sarcasm and beneath the wit, beneath the irony and paradox, you will find 10 stories of men and women who have tried, tested, fallen and stood in love. You will find Sam.

May God bless the work of your hand.’

The book is a prediction of Sam’s mum. She told him with sureness that God will bless the work of his hand. Thus, lyrics of conversation turned into stories, stories into pages and those pages into a book that took seven months to create, handwritten. I remember Sam telling me how he would write and then throw his notebook into the farthest corner of the room. He would pick it back up at 2am. He would write his fingers numb. He would never know how a story would end. He would scribble and scratch words off of the page, re-read them later to realise they were perfect and then put them back in. ‘I need a Lamborghini’ he laughed.

I remember Sam, with aching hands, swelling with warmth and gratitude for the lady who typed his manuscript and creating a space for him to see the book differently. There were times he wanted to give up, but he was tantalised by the prospect of unveiling common issues in relationships through seamless storytelling. There is a richness about the characters whose true stories dance in the book, and there is something to gain from seeing how a perfect relationship is a flawed-but-working relationship. It is the kind of book that would have you stepping in puddles in the rain or almost missing your bus because you are encapsulated in a nebulous cave of stories that trail like fireflies in the dark. Here is a book that is special because it was shaped by the hands and voices that set it alight. Just as the light illuminates it also burns, as do these warm, blistering, candid revelations.

    TRIMS & TIPS

a short story by Sam Akande

The barber’s shop is a cordial arena where news, sports and personal stories are discussed and people express their diverse notions.

Some transform into fanatical crusaders, others into passive participants.

The barber’s shop provides antidotes to boredom.

A place where male bonding occurs, brothers uniting in conjuring solutions for manly predicaments. It’s the only place men gather without getting drunk.

While getting a shape up or a trim, it’s not uncommon to be served an array of queer tales.

Industrial action has crept into my bedroom, a middle-aged man Ken stated.

No nookie nookie? Flint, a deep-voiced, bearded man asked. Flint’s beard was usually groomed to precision.

As a passive participant, listening to these discussions is enchanting. It helps make a long queue at the barber’s shop endurable.

Negotiation; to negotiate, said Andy, one of the customers. He sat on the barber’s chair for his haircut.

Negotiation has broken down, Ken replied.
