    It is a wonderful illustrated picture book that depicts a poor Mexican girl named Yuyi and her search for a special Christmas tree. This family story discusses la Rama, a tradition that is practiced in the southern part of Mexico. Judith Mervis (Pantoja) wrote this book to entertain children and make people feel the way the book’s characters feel in their small, southern town in Mexico during Christmas time. This realistic (though fictitious) story invites us to join in on a fun adventure focusing on the Mexican tradition of singing “la Rama,” whereby children and adults enjoy singing traditional Christmas rhymes door to door before Christmas. In this story, Yuyi decides to buy a Christmas tree after collecting money singing “la Rama,” since her parents are too poor to afford it. Will she be able to get the Christmas tree that she wants?

En este cuento Yuyi decide comprar un árbol de navidad con el dinero que gana después de cantar la rama ya que sus padres son muy pobres y no pueden comprar uno. ¿Podrá Yuyi comprar el árbol de navidad que tanto quiere?

    Judith Mervis (Yudith Pantoja)

    Judith Mervis (Yudith Pantoja) came from Cardenas Tabasco Mexico to teach elementary education in Houston, Texas. She was an English and Psychology professor at the Universidad Popular de la Chontalpa in 1998. She also had a radio show in Aurora, Illinois in 1997 and wrote many articles in different newspapers. Judith Mervis (Yudith Pantoja) is currently teaching at Alief ISD in Houston, Texas. She loves children’s stories, and she just finished her Master Degree on Educational Management at the University of St. Thomas. Judith decided to start writing poems and stories in honor of her dad who died of pancreatic cancer in 2007. She believes that kids learn when they are having fun and making up stories. Her father was a hard-working person, and he used to own a taquería in Huimanguillo Tabasco—that is how Judith and her siblings went to college and finished their studies with honors. Judith is the youngest in her family, and she has a strong commitment to educating kids and showing them the importance of family values.
