Teachable Moments from My Savior - Allison Jordan

    Be Still and Listen!

Life can be very busy! It seems as though, for all of us, things keep getting busier and busier and we are constantly going. Even now as I write this, I just put a load of clothes in the wash, got supper started, hear the joyful sounds of the kids fussing at each other, still have homework to finish, and I can hear the dog at the back door ready to go out. What do I do? Laugh! Laugh at the chaos! There are days when I wonder what boredom is and how that would feel. Then reality sets in and I get back up and get busy. There is never a dull moment around here! I’m sure you all have stories like mine and you keep the candle burning at both ends. All these things are necessary parts to daily life, but are we still keeping God in the forefront of our daily lives? This revelation came to slap me in the face as I went from task to task one day. I find sometimes that I am so wrapped up in getting the necessary things done that I remember that my time alone with God has been very shallow.

God has to take the lead in our lives. A life going from job to job or ministry to ministry without first conversing with God is a life that is setting itself up to fail. God is my strength! How could I put him on the back burner to fulfill my daily duties? Well I am not very proud to admit that I have done this from time to time. A few days ago when I sat down to have my quiet time with God; my to-do list was going through my head. I just had to stop and pray that God would renew my mind. (Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this would; but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.) I had to pray that God would take everything that was hindering my time with him and help me put it aside so I could concentrate and focus on what he had for me in his Word. When you ask God to show up, he does! He showed me that in the busyness of this time that I need to be still. Yes, be still when you are busy! It sounds crazy I know, but this is what God’s Word says. Psalms 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God: It doesn’t say, be still when everything is done for the day and your to-do list has been completely checked off. It says, Be still, so be still is exactly what I did. You know what? My time with him that day was so much sweeter! Praise God!

I urge you to do the same. During these times when schedules are overcrowded and you need about 4 more hours in the day, be still and know that He is God! What sweet fellowship there is with him when we will just be quiet and listen! He is life and breath and he deserves all of me so that I can live this life he has blessed me with!

Thank you, Father, for reminding me that you are always there and ready to spend time with me! I will be still and know that you are Sovereign God!

    A Smile For Weary Shoes

I love shoes! (I know you all find that hard to believe! HA! HA!) Shoes are one of those fun accessories an outfit screams for! You can take a plain old outfit and put a sassy pair of shoes with it and it really changes the whole look. For you men, pardon the word sassy and let me change it to cool or debonair! Shoes can really tell a lot about your personality as well. They are just FUN! Well, one summer I had taken Callie out for back-to-school shopping and we were trying to find her some new tennis shoes for school. The store was extremely busy as many people were out doing the same thing we were and because of the shelves, all I could see of the next aisle were people’s feet. I began to notice their shoes. Some were really cute, some were not so cute, and some were in desperate need of the nearest trashcan. You know what I’m talking about; those shoes that are so worn, that they would probably walk over and throw themselves in the trashcan just to put themselves out of their own misery!

As I watched, I not only noticed their shoes, but the way those people walked and carried their feet. It may sound strange, so please don’t hold this against me, but I really started to think about the people that those shoes belonged to. By watching their feet, I could tell some were weary, (maybe from too much shopping), some were excited, (new shoes are always fun to buy), and some were hurried and frustrated. But by looking at their feet, I had to stop and pray for those that really captured my attention. I felt as though those shoes had a story behind them. Where had those shoes walked, what had they been through? For some, many burdens are carried around on those shoes, which in turn makes for weary feet. In my interest of looking at cute little shoes, the Lord pricked my heart for those wearing the shoes and I am so glad he did.

Proverbs 12:25 An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up.

As we finished our shoe shopping excursion, we walked down the aisles and I began looking for the faces that belonged to those shoes. I wanted in some way for them know that they were cared and prayed for that day. I began to offer a smile and a kind word to some of those that I could easily spot. Yes, some of those faces matched their worn out shoes and a smile did manage to crack on a few of them. I was taught another valuable lesson that day from my wonderful Lord! He never ceases to amaze me with such teachable moments in very unsuspecting places.

There are many that cross our paths every day that are burdened and weary. We cannot always solve their problems but we can lift them up to the Father and offer the love and encouragement that they may need at that very moment. I pray that we all look for ways to offer a smile and a kind word that can cheer an anxious heart and weary feet!

    Shoofly!

Isn’t it very annoying when you sit down to eat and there is a fly just buzzing all around your food? After I went to the grocery store one night, I left the front door opened a little too long unloading groceries and I let a fly in. Now, flies are one of the nastiest varmints alive, and when seen in my home, don’t have a very long life span. Flies love to land on your food and I don’t want to even think of where that fly had its last meal. All I know is that they are disgusting and carry filth that is transferred right onto our dinner. Last summer, Ben and Callie had a lot of fun trying to get a fly that had entered our home. He was very pesky and they got a work out trying to swat him. It took so long in fact, that they named him, Peter. Why Peter, you ask? I have no idea! Leave it to my children to come up with that! Ha-Ha! Well, Peter eventually lost the battle to the wonderful fly swatter but many of Peter’s friends and relatives have come and gone. Such a nuisance! We now have 2 fly swatters in the house to doubly attack those pesky, little creatures.

I started thinking about the verses in I Peter 5:8-9. Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith . . .

We have to be alert at all times! Satan is looking for our vulnerability to attack! He reminds me of that little pest that buzzes around but we have to stand firm in our faith. If we lose our focus on Christ, Satan can land right on us with all that filth and disease that he carries and make us sick. SHOOFLY!!!! As we stay self-controlled, alert, and firm in our faith, we can use our giant swatter and wipe him out. God has given us everything we need to swat him out. He has given us direct access to him 24/7 (Ephesians 6:18 "And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with
