    The Wild Bird

Once upon a time there was a very rich old man who lived in a big house in the country. He had many servants to work for him and he did not have to work himself. But for his pleasure, he kept song birds in cages. Every day he would call his servants and tell them, Come, feed my beautiful song birds as they sing for me. If anything should ever happen to the song birds, you will surely lose your jobs. The servants would do everything he asked although at times they didn’t like it, but they wanted to keep their jobs. their work was a lot easier than having to work hard in the fields all day like the nearby farmers. The other farmers thought the old man’s servants were important because they always had money to spend, but didn’t work hard.

But many times the servants would get angry and wouldn’t let them get too close. They were always afraid that the rich old man might decide to ask one of them to work for him and fire one of them. This was the way it was one spring day when the wild bird came flying by the big house.

The wild bird saw the poor farmers standing close to the rich old man’s house so it flew to a nearby tree and sat above the crowd to watch and listen and find out what was going on. The old man was sitting in a large, wicker chair and as each of his birds would sing a pretty song for him, he would smile and say to his servants, Feed this bird well because it sings a pretty song today. Yes sir, cried the servants. We will do as you wish, immediately.

Then he wild bird thought, It would be nice to live here and sing beautiful songs. The old man feeds his birds very well when they sing for him and he has servants to take care of them. "I will sing
