A WISH FROM TRICIA LA VOICE

For you, I Wish Your Vision to Make a Difference

The land was decorated in brilliant colors of the earth. Mountain tops reaching for the heavens, stones bursting in emerald greens, ruby reds and sparkling blues ,,, yet darkness was all to be seen by many. Miles away, a young women laid with color in one eye, darkness in the other, but an ability to see her power in both.

Lightness, stillness and patience ... remain calm, find your vision.

The people wore grand smiles on their faces and twinkles in their eyes. Clothed in colors of the rainbow, yet darkness was all to be seen by many. Miles away, a young women faced the life that challenged her, determined not to be defeated.

Lightness, stillness and patience ... remain calm ... find the vision God granted you.

A disease, so capable to reverse, forged forward. Silence and ignorance feeding its hunger, robbed the beauty from so many. Yet miles away a woman of perseverance, courage and compassion dared to make a difference and found her vision. A woman capable of seeing the light, remaining still and patient, found her vision by giving others their vision.

The land holds endless beauty. The people are endlessly beautiful. Beauty now seen by all.

For you, I Wish your vision to make a difference

-Tricia La Voice

It is a truly uplifting story. Most of us spend our lives thinking of only taking care of ourselves and our immediate loved ones. Some people go that one step further, and do great things for others. Kay is one of those rare individuals, who have made a real difference to the lives of others. She had a vision, and it was her mental strength, in the face of her physical weakness, that made it possible for her dream to come true.

    FOREWORD

I met Kay Walls in 2002 while I was training at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne. My first meeting with Kay was at the emergency room where she had come for a glaucoma operation. Over that year I came to know Kay as the most positive and courageous woman. She was out there to help people and I was just one of them.

When I returned home to Nepal in 2003 after completing my glaucoma fellowship, she visited Nepal in 2004. I had never imagined that she would visit us here in Nepal. That was when the concept of Nepal Glaucoma Eye Clinic (NGEC) was conceived. She was determined to raise money to build a clinic to address the problems regarding glaucoma in Nepal. In 2006, Kay visited Nepal for the opening ceremony of the NGEC—the glaucoma wing of Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology in Kathmandu.

NGEC has been providing glaucoma treatment to the people since 2006. In 2007 The Bhaktapur Glaucoma Study—the first extensive epidemiological research on glaucoma in Nepal—was also undertaken at the NGEC. The results of this study have lead to plans of establishing an eye hospital in Bhaktapur district of Nepal. In 2012 a glaucoma fellowship program will commence, which will train ophthalmologists to become specialists in glaucoma thus serving as a training centre as well.

NGEC will in the future also serve as a glaucoma training centre for other ophthalmologists coming from neighbouring countries.

This book written by Kay reflects the determination, hard work and compassion of a person dedicated to help glaucoma patients in Nepal. I would like to congratulate her and also thank all those who have been involved in this endeavour to help us here in Nepal.
