Acknowledgements
It is important to acknowledge those people, places and events that help a person become who they are. Like almost everyone, I must begin with my parents who, among a whole host of other things, assumed all children should have a good education and sent me off to university never doubting I would succeed at anything.
Thank you to my hero brother who I love dearly even though he’s crazy.
And thank you to anyone else who has contributed in a positive way to my life and ideas. This includes, but is not limited to other members of my family, friends, past co-workers and students.
Those who have contributed to my life in a negative way or who ignored me altogether should not feel any thanks at all, though I do acknowledge that you have contributed to my life and helped make me who I am today.
Dedication
For Hannah, without whom this book
might never have been finished.
Chapter01.jpegStorm Coming
When Leila Porter got up that morning, she didn’t know about the storms that were headed her way. Oh, she knew about the storm raging outside. No one could miss that. It had been rainy and windy for two very long and very boring days and everyone knew it was supposed to rain again today. All day.
What Leila didn’t know was how stormy the morning was going to get for her in and around her own house. She didn’t know that by one o’clock, she’d be crawling back into bed, pulling the covers up over her head and calling for a do-over.
The day began normally enough. Leila dressed, ate breakfast and headed back to her room to try and find something interesting to do. She had books, movies, toys and games, but she’d had enough of these by the middle of day two. With nothing new and exciting to do on day three, she sat down at the bay window with her feet stretched out along the window seat and she sighed. Deeply.
She watched the rain as the wind blew it against the window. Drips, like little rushing streams made their way down the panes. Sometimes they joined together to make rivers that flowed even more quickly down the windows to the sills. From there the rivers turned to waterfalls that splashed violently down to the ground two stories below.
Leila looked across the window seat at the slippers on her feet. Usually, the sunny little ducks sitting on her toes make her feel good, but today they seemed to be as sad and bored as she was. Well,
she thought, at least they have each other.
Outside, the rain kept falling. And the wind kept blowing. And Leila still couldn’t think of anything fun to do.
Why can’t it stop raining?
she said out loud though there was no one around to answer her. It just wasn’t fair that it rained during the summer! Rain in the fall and winter was okay. She was in school then and even when she was at home, she had lots of schoolwork to do. But now, when she could be outside playing, it definitely should NOT be raining.
If only Stephanie would come back.
Stephanie Collier was Leila’s best friend and lived across the street and one house over. The two girls had grown up together and were practically sisters. Except that they weren’t really sisters. Right now Stephanie was away with her family on their summer vacation. They’d gone camping again like they did every year. Leila wished she could have gone with them. It would be so much fun. And it’s probably not raining where they are.
She looked through the drips of rain into the back garden.
If the rain let up even just a little, she could go outside, down the street and imagine she was riding a pony in the woods she knew so well. Or she could fight dragons. Or hunt for wood elves. But, she really didn’t want to get wet, so any trip to her ‘enchanted forest’ was out of the question. Leila sighed again.
She looked back into her room. What could she do?
Nothing came to mind.
Except Simon. She looked back at the bed and saw her little bear leaning against the pillow.
Simon was a medium sized bear, though when she first met him, Leila had thought he was huge. Back then she could just reach her arms around him enough to give him an almost decent hug. Now he could swing comfortably from the end of hand as she walked without hitting the ground. Sometimes she rested him in the crook of her elbow. Leila had made a point of taking good care of him, but his age was beginning to show. His small, round eyes, once shiny and new, were now dulled a little. His stitching had needed tending to on a number of occasions and his stuffing had settled uncomfortably here and there.
At the moment, he was looking back at Leila and his small, stitched smile showed how happy he was to see her. Despite his condition, he was always smiling and happy. Lucky Simon
, she thought. He’s almost always happy.
She went to the bed and plopped herself down beside him.
"What should
