About this ebook

The strength of a man is in his ability to move on without being held hostage by circumstances and through the recognition of new horizons. Even though others would want to remind him of the lesser moments, the moments become memory unless you choose to make it current reality. It is by choice that we allow the past to consume today. While the new may shake the comfort zone, everything happens for a reason and causes a resolve for change. Soon we appreciate that defining moment which influences our determination to relook, redress, and move on!

    Preface

I will succeed, I must succeed, and I will learn how to succeed. I know success is not an event, but my beginning on this quest is the greatest event of my life. What makes me different from any other successful person? Why can’t I also succeed? I will not listen to those who want me to stay in that same situation. Can I find success? I will discover that success is within me and that I am successful, and I will stop looking at the world to measure my success, but rather use the world’s version of success as my barometer on my quest for this more developed form of human life. Do you agree that it is easier done than said, not easier said than done, based on my hunger to make things happen?

Will my life be viewed as having given to this earth or having taken, for it is in giving that you are allowed, rather than entitled, to take, and only those who give are recognized as having lived a truly fulfilled and successful life. I want you to succeed, and I suggest that you read this book. I trust that you will be inspired and motivated to make things happen to get yourself into that higher form of human life known as success. When deciding to write this book, I had a number of questions that confronted the idea and challenged the merits for discussing such a complex subject.

Even after completing the book and having people praise its content, these questions still remain in my mind as before. Am I suitably qualified to talk about success? Is anyone suitably qualified? I feel content and therefore consider myself as successful. However, I am still on a mission to make things happen and will not rest until I find that place that I want to claim as mine on this planet. I believe that the complexities in the subject are due to our self-perceived limitations to becoming successful people. I am human and have made mistakes, and I will continue to make mistakes. However, my mistakes are lessons that I learn from, and when a lesson arrives, we must embrace it and confront its intent to enhance our progress to success.

Another consideration was, after all the books written about success, of what value will this book be? Even if everyone spoke about success every day, it would not be enough because the success debate is an everyday, lifelong discussion that we should have with ourselves and with others.

What makes my contribution unique? I don’t think that it is unique, but rather consider the manner in which I have presented my thoughts to be accessible to all minds. This means that my target audience is, first, myself and those around me and then any person wanting to explore and benefit from the options for successful living. This book is about sharing my ideas that I reflect on from time to time in order to become a better person. Success begins with what you do every day, and it is the little things that impact on our long-term dreams. So to read this collection of ideas, you must have a desire to succeed, know that every day is the first day on your road to success, and do all you can to make changes to your life that will contribute to making you a better person.

This book is intended to turn the ‘light on’ in your mind and to be the life-changing motivation that makes you realize that today you can. In the same manner as the birth/loss of a loved one, marriage/divorce, passing/failing an examination, or any other life-changing event shall make you focus on what matters in life. We achieve what we spend time focusing on. I have had many life-changing experiences that made me focus and, in some cases, change approach, such as being detained in the mid-1980s for my involvement in student politics, getting married, losing a friend in Wentworth in a senseless gangster fight, my mother’s stroke, and my son’s accident.

So we can choose to let the events in our lives get us down, or we can rise and become what we want to become using the experiences as lessons. Enjoy reading this book, and you will always say, ‘Today I will.’ And, yes, you will . . .

    Every beginning has an end,

and every end has a beginning.

    Step into Success

Successful people understand that all true success begins in the mind; it is an attitude. Successful people are protective of their mind and realize it is the field where dreams are sown and grown.

    (Martin Gray)

If you want to accomplish your mission, you will have to forget about how things have been done for ages.

    (Phinda Madi)

When researching the subject of success, a close friend explained that success must be placed into two categories namely, universal and contextual success. Universal, meaning that there is a standard version of success, which suggests economically wealthy people are successful. On the other hand, in the contextual version, success is determined by the understanding and acceptance of what success is in the area in which the question is being posed.

For example, in the USA, a person who has five hundred thousand dollars could not be considered as successful, yet in the South African context, one with an equivalent amount in South African Rands could be said to be successful. This book is, however, not about either of these, but rather the personal acceptance of success and concentrating success to an individual understanding and acceptance based on more than just money.

Everybody wishes for success. We wake up in the morning appealing to the Lord for a breakthrough in our lives as though it is as easy as
