Forword
Study after study has shown that the environment, that is diet, exercise level and smoking accounted for 70 to 95% of the risk for acquiring diabetes, heart disease, obesity, cancer and autoimmune problems. Yet the vast majority of the physicians use medication and surgical procedures to treat their patients instead of teaching them how lifestyle impacts health. The doctors who treat multiple sclerosis are no different. The vast majority of MS specialists are no different. They rely only on medication and know nothing about the impact of diet and lifestyle on MS disease progression and severity.
Like Ramon, I have multiple sclerosis and was severely disabled by my disease. In 2007, I could walk short distances with two walking sticks. It was hard to sit up. I was having more brain fog. I am a physician, and I had been studying the medical research using pubmed.gov, to see if I could find something that might slow my disease progression. That summer, based upon my review of the scientific research, Paleo principles and Functional Medicine, I created a protocol that lead to a dramatic improvement in function. One year later I was able to walk throughout the hospital without a cane, and even complete an 18 mile bicycle ride with my family.
I was like Paul on the way to Damascus. The old me had been struck down, replaced by someone who understood that diet and lifestyle are far more powerful at creating health and treating disease than medication. How I practiced medicine changed; instead of relying on prescriptions I spent time teaching people why and how to eat and live for health. I shifted my research from diagnostic error to nutrition and lifestyle as treatment for progressive MS. I also teach the public and the health professionals about the utility of diet and lifestyle to treat chronic disease.
In this book, Ramon Garcia, shares his journey with MS.
