God has given you a message to share, and you believe He wants you to write a book, but you have no idea where to start or what to expect through the process. If so, then this book is for you. Perhaps you have a book already written, but you are unsure what the next step may be or how to navigate through the murky and often turbulent waters of Christian publishers, literary agents, and editors. The secular world is money-driven, but you may not be in it for the money. You may simply want to bring honor to God and glory to His Son, Jesus Christ. You might be more interested in helping fellow brothers or sisters in Christ or in reaching the lost. Companies have done their research and they know you exist, and predators are out there, seeking to take advantage of you and of the vision God gave you.
This book brings a unique perspective on the Christian writing and publishing world. To begin with, I pastored for thirteen years in Colorado, giving me a strong pastoral passion and love for the people and things of God. In fact, my first two published works were based on a series of sermons I preached. I have also been a professional freelance editor going on ten years, having edited Christian manuscripts that range from devotionals to Christian science fiction. Lastly, I am a published author with nearly ten published books as of this writing. I’ve published both nonfiction and fiction and have been published traditionally as well as plunged into the world of self-publishing and literary agencies. Being a pastor, editor, and author means I’ve come to know the pitfalls that exist in both writing and publishing Christ-honoring, Christian literature.
The advice given here is partly pastoral in nature but falls heavily on the editor/author perspective. Below are just a few of the subjects covered in this guide:
• Honoring God and Jesus Christ in your writing
• Developing a cost and time analysis of writing and publishing a book
• Nonfiction writing guidelines
• Fiction writing guidelines
• Copyright laws and plagiarism no-nos
• Copyright issues when quoting from modern Bible versions
• Proper styling for biblical references
• Proper capitalization rules for God and the Bible
• Dealing with sensitive material and subjects for a Christian audience
• When to submit your manuscript to an editor
• What to look for and expect from an editor
• Understanding the editing process
• Interior layout and formatting guidelines
• Cover design guidelines
• The different types of publishing
• Determining what type of publishing is best for you
• Pros and cons of traditional publishing and self-publishing
• And much more!

Chapter One
Know Your Purpose for Writing
Where there is no vision, the people perish. – Proverbs 29:18a
Every Christ-honoring book begins with the author’s vision and purpose. This is key to a fulfilling writing ministry. To help you determine your ultimate purpose for writing a book, I will ask you a series of probing questions. These questions will help you determine your purpose, your audience, and your goals.
Why Are You Writing?
Why are you writing? Christians write for a variety of reasons. The most common that I’ve run across in ten years of editing Christian manuscripts are as follows:
To honor God
To share the Gospel
To defend the faith
To strengthen the brethren
To inspire others
To teach truth
To bring attention to an important issue
To air a grievance
To facilitate personal healing
To harp on a pet peeve
To correct doctrinal error
Some of these are probably not the best reasons to write a book or ways to attract a wide audience. But it is essential to know why you are writing your book. Without knowing why you are writing, you will struggle to understand your audience.
And unless you intend to write your book only for yourself, you fully intend for someone else to read what you wrote. If you know why you are writing, you’ll be able to better understand your audience.
Who Is Your Audience?
So who is your audience? Who do you want to read your book? With those questions, let me ask you another: who are you really writing for? The typical Christian author is writing for three people or groups:
The Author (himself or herself)
Others
God
For some Christian authors, their audience is only themselves. They need to heal from some trauma and write because writing is therapeutic. Others have a grievance and find that few share their grievance, so they feel compelled to write a book about it. Others have pet peeves that consume them, and writing becomes an outlet to express everything they want to say because they lack the platform or followers with whom to share their views. Some Christian authors write to make money, and though there is nothing intrinsically wrong with that goal, they are still essentially writing for themselves.
Some authors write for others. These books tend to be self-help style devotionals. They want to help others overcome problems, trials, or burdens. These types of books command the widest possible audience among Christians, for if you can help those seeking help, then you will sell books.
Still other Christian authors write for God. These books are often a defense of the faith (apologetic) in nature. They tend to be heavily doctrinal and seek to bring glory to the Lord as a primary focus.
Yes, it is true that most, if not all Christian authors will feel—regardless of their reasons for writing—that they are writing for God.
I run a freelance Christian editing business, and we often hear authors say, God told me to write this,
or God led me to write this.
As Christians ourselves, we will never doubt the truth of such declarations, but we’ve learned that though God may have given them a vision on what He wants, the route they take to accomplish their goals is more often than not one of their own choosing. God may want you to be transparent in your writing, but not everyone will interpret those instructions the same way, so the application of God’s vision may be different for each author. This is why understanding your audience and purpose is essential. It will help you understand the best way to obey the Lord.
Again, understanding to whom you are really writing is essential to knowing your audience. Your audience represents those who find value in your book. When you write primarily for yourself, your audience is severely limited. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t write your book, but you must understand that when it comes to getting your message in the hands of other people, you will be limited in scope. If your goal is to sell many books, then you probably need to appeal to a wider audience, which means that your book must meet a larger need.
Once you know your audience, you will know your purpose better too. A synergetic relationship exists between purpose and audience. Knowing one better allows you to know the other better too. And the more conviction and purpose you can bring to your writing the more you will be able to influence your audience.
A pastor reached out to me and told me of his passion and desire to write a book on the lessons he had learned from John’s second epistle. He wanted to provide Sunday school material for teachers who were teaching on that particular book of the Bible. It is a great idea! Unfortunately, when I asked him how many people were looking for Sunday school material on 2nd John, he fell silent. He knew as did I that his target audience would be severely limited. In truth,
