Lord Ram - Ram Das
The Four Princes
Thousands of years ago, in our country, there was a king named Dasharatha who ruled over a kingdom, known as Koshala. Ayodhya, a prosperous city on the bank of river Saryu, was his kingdom’s capital. He was a descendant of a line of mighty and generous Suryavanshi kings. He was such a great master of art of warfare that on ‘a number of occasions he was called upon to help gods in their war against the demons.
Year after year passed on and King Dasharatha grew old and he was worried at not having an heir to ascent to the throne of Ayodhya. The anxiety that the great Suryavanshi dynasty would end with him .was giving him sleepless nights. One day he visited sage Vashishtha the royal I priest and told him his anxiety and sought his advice. The sage advised him to perform a yagya and pray to God and assured him that his wish 3 would be fulfilled on the advice of his royal priest and under the guidance of sage Rishyashringa a yagya was performed.
Dasharatha’s prayers did not go fruitless. His wish was fulfilled, and four sons were born to him. Rama, the reincarnation of Lord Vishnu, was the eldest son of King Dasharatha and his eldest queen Kaushalya. The two other queens, Sumitra and Kaikeyi, bore him three other sons Lakshmana, Bharata and Shatrughna When these princes were born, there were great festivities throughout Ayodhya and alms were given away. There youngest queen, Kaikeyi, was very fond of him. Rama, supposed to be the reincarnation of Lord Vishnu himself, was blessed with all the noble qualities. The four brothers loved and cared for anther very much, but there was a close affinity between Rama and Lakshmana. Lakshmana was very devoted to Rama. Gradually the princes grew up to be handsome lads. They were sent to the sage Vashishtha for education. There they learned not only vamitra who lived in his hermitage in the forest. He meditated and did yagyas for the welfare of mankind. He was always. disturbed and tormented by demons; so, one day, the sage Vishvamitra came to the court of King Dasharatha. The king and the queens welcomed him and treated him respectfully. The four princes too folded their hands reverentially and touched his feet respectfully.
Feeling honoured by the sage’s visit Dasharatha said with veneration, Most Revered Sir! I am highly honoured by your holy visit. Of what service can I be to you?
Vishvamitra said, "O great king I have my worldly desires. 1 am a hermit devoted to worship, meditation and yagyas in the dense forest. But for some time some wicked demons defile my sacred rites and they throw blood and flesh into the holy fire, so I am unable to say my prayers, meditate or perform yagyas. I have come here to ask you to send Rama with me. I am sure your valorous prince will be able to rid me of these wicked demons who prowl in the forest at all time and disturb the hermists.
Hearing this King Dasharatha became sad. He did not wish to send Rama, the apple of his eye and heir to his throne, to face unforeseen dangers and fight the demons in the vast forest. He, therefore, thought of a way out, and with folded hands and reverence, said to Vishvamitra, Holy Sir! How can Rama, a mere lad, venture out alone and fight against those evil spirited demons? Rama is but a tender boy. He is too young and unskilled to face the demons. I am ready to send my entire army to protect you. My brave soldiers are capable enough to exterminate the horde of demons. They will make it certain that no one disturbs you in your worship and meditation, or pollutes your sacred yagyas.
But the sage declined the king’s offer of detailing his army. He said, O king, do not fear your son’s safety. I am sure you yourself know the courage and valour of your prince. It is your great attachment to Rama which makes you to deny what 1 ask you. I am sure Rama can protect me all by himself.
