Transplants reveals the lives of two modern-day Americans, Charlotte and Theo, who are suffocating in their small Georgia town, so they escape—one to Italy, the other to Paraguay. Their ensuing joys and disasters... divorce, being shot, attacked by jaguars, a miscarriage, parasitic disease... are shaped not only by the enchanting people they meet, but also by a history of transplants in these countries. Germans transplanted to Paraguay before and after WWII, California rootstock was transplanted to save the rotting European vineyards in 1890, and Theo eventually finds he needs a very real heart transplant. Charlotte and Theo are also immigrants, hoping to build lives in their new countries. The people there welcome them, take care of them, provide friendship and healthcare, and share the little food they have. After ten years of life and trauma abroad, a twist of fate brings the two together for another adventure they couldn't have imagined.
A vivid story of how the history, however dark, of fabulous romantic places are woven into the lives of those who come to call them home.
Book club discussions of Transplants are usually paired with wine from north Italy (Gewürztraminer or Lagrein), where Charlotte becomes a winemaker.
