Chapter 1
Get Involved with The Things You Love
Do what you love; you’ll be better at it. It sounds pretty simple, but you’d be surprised how many people don’t get this one right away.
— LL Cool J
Ever since I was young, I believed that life is all about doing what you love. Though this often meant that I had to go against the flow, be that one fish that goes upstream while the rest float comfortably downstream, I never gave up what I loved for what others thought I should do. Sure, for others it meant that I was the odd one out. For me, it only meant that I stood out. It meant that I was not the same as the many, many similar people I saw around me – in school, church, on the streets, or places I worked at.
I tell you this because I want everyone to understand that there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing what you love. It may be tough sometimes, I grant that, but it is also the only thing that will bring you happiness and satisfaction in life. Though people might point a finger at you and try to bring you down, I want you to know that getting involved with the things that you love will bring not just happiness but success to you. Do you know why it will bring you success? It will, for the very simple reason, that if you love something, you will work at it until you are better at it than others. Then, as you will have proficiency and efficiency in the work that you love, you will soar high without a doubt.
Every single one of us has a natural inclination, an inborn talent, and an innate love for certain things. This means that there is an internal compass within all of us. In simple words, we are born with an invisible inner compass that directs and guides us. Just as the compass needle points to something, the inner compass that we have keeps calling till we respond to its calls and do what it demands of us. What does it demand? It demands that we stop fooling ourselves doing things that we have no interest in and love for. It demands that we come back to the center which is our true home. The foundation, the bricks, and the roof of this home are all the things that we love in life; and this home is populated by the people whom we truly love.
Many people do not have a good start in life. Fortunately, that was never the case with me. Being born in a family which did what it loved and which encouraged me that I do the same, I was raised right from my childhood to do everything I love and to never waste my time on things that had no place in my heart. My parents always instructed me to use my time productively. This did not mean that I should do everything that others were doing, or that I should follow popular opinion blindly. It meant something entirely different. It meant that I should find out the things that make me happy, or would make me happy, then go after them without holding myself back. The support I got from my family made me so courageous when it came to taking chances in my life that I never let any doubts or fears of failure stop me from pursuing things that really mattered to me.
It makes me sad that people are trained to give up their many dreams and aspirations. Chalking it up to experience, people part with their hopes and the things that they really wanted to do. Just as a prey is caught in a snare by a hunter, they too get trapped into living a life they never wanted to live. This makes for such a smothering existence as every hope you had for living a happy life is smashed to smithereens. Who comes to your rescue then? Let me tell you who? No one. After you are brought down, ensnared, and left defeated, others will steer clear of you. You are, in the end, left on your own. I want you to accept this fact and know that you are the only one who can help and rescue yourself.
As they say, this is the day and age when you have to be your own boss, once you realize this, you will be able to take control of your existence. You will then have a very important choice to make. You can either continue living a stifled life, dependent on others and devoid of all that you love, or you can get up and go after what is really important to you. It may seem very demanding to break free of the chains that have been put around you by the world and circumstances. But I insist that you break free now. If you do not live the life that you want by doing everything that you love, I will tell you that there is no one to blame but yourself.
When you do one thing that you love wholeheartedly, it will eventually open many doors of opportunities for you. Life is made up of stepping stones or loves notes, I like to say. When you immerse yourself in doing just one thing that you love, you will discover two or three more things that you love. This is because there is a deeper connection between you and the things that you love than you realize. It is for this reason that I believe that when you take up the risks and get involved with the things that you love, you will always find a way – and not just one way but several ways. You may be wondering why I am so sure about all of this. I am sure because I speak from personal experience. It has been my very own experience in life that when I went after the thing that I loved, I learned so many other things that I had a hidden love for.
Loving something already is one thing, finding a new love is another. You have to do both if you want your life to be rewarding and worthwhile. This applies to both, things and people. Let’s talk about things that you love and can love first. As I said, I talk from my own experiences. I want to share a bit of my life story with you to explain the argument I just made.
In my early years, I had a deep love of music. I just loved listening to music. I liked how I felt when I listened to music, as if waves of bliss rolled inside me, even making me want to cry tears of joy at times. So, naturally, I became very curious about music. I decided to learn how to create music, and how to use the instruments that produced music. I started out with learning one instrument and did not stop there. I soon found out about instruments I loved and I learned how to play them too. First, it was just the drums. In time, I moved on to learning how to play the trumpet, baritone, and piano as well. Each appealed to me so much that I, very naturally, felt the desire to get more and more involved with them. This, too, was not the end. Before long, I decided that I wanted to learn how to write music too. To help myself in this regard, I enrolled in a School of Arts to be in the right atmosphere. This expanded into a full-fledged plan where I learned to read, write as well as produce music. I started practicing my music-related capabilities at Church, where I got the know-how of the whole set-up using monitors and other audio equipment so that I could record music.
Eventually, this became a part of my career. Something that I love completely, let me add. Starting out from the bottom level, I made my way up with persistence and patience – all for the sake of what I loved – until I reached the stage where I became a manager,
