Chapter 1 – Discover Life through Mindfulness
Mindfulness is simple. It is being deeply aware of the present moment and fully accepting who and where you are now.
The practice of mindfulness meditation helps you become appreciative of the now. This is because, in moments of mindfulness meditation, you let go of any thoughts and emotions pertaining to the past and future. The present moment is embraced wholly as it is the time when you are indeed your authentic self.
Although the concept of mindfulness has only recently become a buzzword in the health, fitness, and productivity industries, its practice has actually been around for hundreds of years. It may have originated from ancient Buddhism, and the modern-day term mindfulness is an English translation of the Pali word sati, which means to bear in mind.
In other words, when you are in mindful meditation, you bear in mind the present moment in that you devote your attention to it. You are fully aware of the reality of the here and now. There is no judgment; you do not wonder whether the present moment is good or bad, or whether you like it or not. Instead, you simply perceive it as it is now without using your opinions to cloud it.
It is important to note that in mindfulness, you are to be non-reactive. This means you should refrain from reacting automatically to the experience. Instead, you respond to it. The difference between react and response is that the latter involves consideration, while the former is purely instinctive.
The Benefits of Mindfulness
The main reason why an increasing number of people want to practice mindfulness meditation regularly is because of all the benefits that come with it. In fact, the positive results are so astounding that researchers have given much attention to mindfulness, leading to a steady influx of scientific research to back the claims of devoted practitioners. Here are some of the most commonly cited benefits:
It helps treat anxiety and depression.
Anxiety and depression are usually triggered by two things. The first one is rumination, or negative thinking patterns which the person chooses to repeat over and over again in their mind. The second is complete avoidance of the negative thought or emotion, which prevents the person from dealing with and solving the problem.
If you want to find a solution to anxiety and depression, it is advised that you practice mindfulness because it helps you understand your own thought processes. This is because being in the present moment shifts you from going on auto-pilot to being in charge. It also helps you to become witness
to the waves of emotions that you are experiencing. In this sense, you are shifting your perspective from being the victim to being the observer, enabling you to see things from a more rational yet compassionate point of view.
Through mindfulness, you also gather the courage to face difficult emotions or experiences. By facing your problems, you are able to find solutions for situations that you can still change or instill acceptance within yourself for those which you cannot influence. People who commit experiential avoidance often end up becoming even more anxious or depressed because the problem simply resurfaces after a while.
Through regular practice of mindfulness meditation, both rumination and experiential avoidance can be disabled whenever you encounter a difficult part in your life. They are instead replaced by acceptance and healthy, positive thoughts.
It reduces stress
Chronic stress is linked to a wide array of physical and psychological problems, which is why it is important to reduce it. Mindfulness is one of the most effective ways of doing so, because it helps you respond to stress in a more efficient way. It helps you cope with multiple stressors, from being patient when stuck in traffic, to having to deal with difficult co-workers, to getting home and managing the household.
Practicing mindfulness meditation itself is an all-natural way to detoxify
the mind, because you are allowing yourself some time to unplug from your fast-paced, everyday life to simply appreciate the exact moment of being alive.
It enhances mental ability
Without a doubt, mindfulness meditation promotes one’s ability to concentrate. Imagine being able to sit still and focus on the present moment for a long period of time in spite of any possible distractions. Doing so would naturally increase the brain’s ability to focus. Mindfulness meditation also enhances one’s ability to infer, or the ability to make intelligent guesses. You do not even have to meditate for long periods of time to improve your mental ability, but what does matter is you doing it on a daily basis.
It promotes creativity
Your mindset plays a huge role in your creativity. A mind that is too focused on the negative or exhaustion will find it difficult to be curious about new things and try something new. However, with mindfulness meditation, the mind will become more open towards fresh ideas and new paths.
It strengthens your relationships with others
Mindfulness helps you become better at handling your relationships with other people. One of the possible reasons behind this is that it
