On 17th June 2011, South Korean soldiers fired upon a civilian passenger airliner after mistaking it for a North Korean military aircraft. On 1st September 1983, a Soviet fighter pilot shot down a civilian Boeing 747 after misidentifying it for a U.S. spy plane. Incorrectly identifying planes can be fatal, and has already killed hundreds of innocent people. But how exactly do you recognize different types of aircraft? They all look the same, right? Airbus just means a big plane, that's why it's called bus, right?
WRONG.
Fantastic Planes and How to Identify Them is all about visually identifying planes. It contains historical backgrounds, diagrams, characteristics and identification guidances of around seventy types of aircraft. If you are a person with a gun watching out for enemy aircraft, this book is a must for you (and please use this book to identify planes before shooting). If you are an airline crew or airplane enthusiast, then this book should be a really enjoyable read for you. Or if you simply want to stay away from the Boeing 737 MAX 8 but don't how it looks, then this book will be really helpful.

1. Prologue
When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the Earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been and there you will always long to return
- Leonardo da Vinci
And while looking skyward, identifying aircraft incorrectly might cause disaster. On 17th June 2011, South Korean soldiers fired upon a civilian passenger airliner after mistaking it for a North Korean military aircraft. The aircraft belonged to South Korea's Asiana Airlines and was coming in for landing with 119 people on-board. Thankfully, the plane was not damaged and everyone was safe. Being able to identify aircraft correctly would have prevented this shooting incident.
Not everyone is so lucky, though. On 1st September 1983, Korean Air Lines flight 007 blundered into Soviet airspace due to enormous errors in navigation. Mistakenly believed to be a U.S. spy plane, it was shot down by a Soviet fighter jet. The 007 flight number, ironically, did not contribute to this mistake. The chain of blunders culminated with the Soviet fighter pilot misidentifying the four-engined Boeing 747 for a four-engined Boeing RC-135 used by their American rivals for intelligence gathering. Regrettably, all 269 people on-board died a horrific death in that incident.
This book provides detailed techniques along with diagrams and flowcharts on how to visually identify around seventy variants of modern civilian aircraft. Retired or rare aircraft models have not been included since the purpose of this book is to assist you in identifying modern mainstream aircraft. Including aircraft that you are highly unlikely to ever see would make that process unnecessarily complicated.
While identifying aircraft correctly is a matter of life and death for people with weapons, for others it is a fun and rewarding activity. But this entertaining activity often becomes a serious business. During the 2nd World War and the Cold War, multiple countries encouraged their citizens to become plane spotters to identify aircraft flying over their country. For instance, Great Britain had the Royal Observer Corps from 1925 to 1995. This Corps, which composed mainly of civilian volunteers, was meant to visually detect, identify and track aircraft over Britain. Decades later, it was leisurely plane spotters who helped uncover the CIA's secret extra-legal transfer of prisoners.
Now-a-days, there are more people who have adopted identifying planes as a hobby than ever before. Commonly referred to as plane spotters, they flock to their local airports to observe, identify and photograph visiting aircraft. Thus, the words ''identifying'' and ''spotting'' have been used interchangeably in this book.
If you are a person with a gun watching out for enemy aircraft, this book is a must for you (and please use this book to identify planes before shooting). If you are an airplane enthusiast, then this book should be an enjoyable read for you because it contains historical backgrounds, diagrams, characteristics and identification guidances of a wide range of aircraft.
2. Structure of This Book
Aircraft flying in today's skies are broadly divided into two types: Fixed-wing and Rotary-wing. Rotary-wing refers to helicopters. Since helicopters are a totally different breed, they are not included in this book. This book's focus is on Fixed-wing.
There are varieties even among Fixed-wing aircraft. In industry standards, all Fixed-wing planes belong to one of the following categories:
1. Commercial Aviation
2. General Aviation
3. Military Aviation
General includes business jets and private aircraft while Military includes combat, transport, reconnaissance and other types of flying machines used by military organizations. This book's focus is on Commercial Aviation. For most of us, Commercial is the only type we can avail. Commercial aircraft, as the name suggests, includes all the airplanes that are operated by airline companies to transport passengers and freight around the world.
Among commercial aircraft, most are passenger-carrying which carry us, our luggage as well as some freight. On the other hand, some are dedicated freighters which carry freight only, not passengers. Moreover, some airplanes are known as converted freighters. These were passenger-carrying aircraft in the past but then got converted to freighters. Many spanking new airplanes that proudly fly passengers now will also be converted to freighters in future once they get worn out and are no longer economically viable to carry passengers. There are also combi aircraft which partition the cabin to carry a combination of passengers and extensive amounts of freight. The number of combi in mainstream aviation is dwindling, though. At this point so many variations and differences and exceptions might make identifying aircraft look overwhelming. However, once you go through this book, you will know how to do it easily and successfully.
Manufacturers generally design aircraft ''families'' that contain multiple ''members'' which share the family's core design but differ in various aspects. For example, the Boeing 777 family has multiple members such as the Boeing 777-300ER, 777-200LR and so on which share the same general design but have different lengths, capacities and ranges. So the Boeing 777 is not a particular aircraft, it is the name of a family. Each Boeing 777 is either a 777-300ER or a 777-200LR or a 777-200ER or some other member of that family.
These members are known as variants and visually identifying them is what this book is all about. I have included around seventy aircraft variants from twenty families in this book. Obviously I would have loved to include more but that is beyond the scope of this book. First, time constraint is a big issue and I want to complete, publish and deliver this book to your hand as soon as possible. The other big issue is many aircraft types have been retired and do not fly anymore or can be seen rarely and only in remote corners of Earth. I did not include them since you are highly unlikely to ever come across them.
This book has 10 chapters:
1. Prologue (An introduction to the book)
2. Structure of This Book (A detailed scope and organization of the book and how to use it effectively, you are presently here)
3. Levels of Visual Identification (An overview of different aspects and levels of aircraft identification skills)
4. External Factors (Descriptions of different external factors that influence observation and visual identification of aircraft)
5. Key Terms in Aviation and Aerospace (Explanations of some key terminology and common industry phraseology used in aerospace and aviation)
6. Aircraft Components (Descriptions and labeled diagrams of the most fundamental aircraft components that are important for spotting)
7. Aircraft Descriptions (Detailed description of aircraft families with their backgrounds, diagrams, characteristics and techniques of identification)
8. Flowcharts (Logically guided processes for visual identification of aircraft families, variants and sub-variants)
9. Epilogue (Conclusion)
10. Extra Materials: References, Length Comparison and Engine Models (Information sources, a comparative list of aircraft lengths and a list of specific engine models available for each aircraft)
There are two ways to use this book. The first one is to use chapter 7's diagrams and characteristics to familiarize yourself with all the families and variants so you can recognize any aircraft just by looking at it. The second one is to use chapter 8's flowcharts to spot identifying characteristics and logically deduce any plane's identity. If the first one is like a sledgehammer, the second one is like a scalpel. The best approach is to combine them which often produces the greatest results. Being familiar with aircraft families enables you to use flowcharts smoothly, while using the flowcharts' guidance helps you become more knowledgeable of aircraft characteristics. In addition, going through chapter 6 and learning about aircraft components and identifying characteristics is recommended unless you already know a lot about airplanes.
3. Levels of Visual Identification
Identifying planes, as a hobby, is addictive. It has various depths and details that spotters discover with time. Identifying
can actually mean recognizing a lot of things. For example, identifying the aircraft family, or the specific variant within that family, or just the manufacturer, or the engine type, or simply whether it carries passengers or freight. With knowledge and experience, anyone can spot even the most minute and rare characteristics of any aircraft. An experienced spotter can identify all the relevant details at a glance within a second.
You can use the following categories to evaluate your level of skill and expertise in visual aircraft identification:
Level 1: Able to identify an aircraft's broad
