About this ebook

"A dark, twisted thrill ride that is also a funny, warm-hearted romance . . . I adore it." --Laini Taylor, New York Times bestselling author of Strange the Dreamer and Muse of Nightmares

In this sequel to the cinematic, romantic fantasy The Edge of Everything, star-crossed X and Zoe must overcome the boundaries of their two worlds in order to find their way back to each other.

Things have changed for seventeen-year-old Zoe ever since the otherworldly events that brought her together with the mysterious bounty hunter she calls X. In order to save Zoe and her family, X has done the unthinkable--he's given up his freedom and returned to captivity in the Lowlands.

X is determined to break the lords' hold on him once and for all, but being stripped of his power pushes him toward a darkness he's never experienced and a past he's never known. The secrets that surface could be the key to reuniting X and Zoe . . . or they could mean the destruction of everything they have been fighting for.

Gripping and full of heart, this epic continuation of Jeff Giles' series will bring readers right to the edge of everything.

The Brink of Darkness is the second book of the duology series, The Edge of Everything. I truly enjoyed reading the first book in this series and was waiting with baited breath for the second book to come out, I just had to know what had happened to X after he was taken from Zoe. I definitely fell in love with X in the first book, not the swoon kind of love but more like how you love a goofy puppy. He was sweet and adorably awkward and I was gutted at the end of book one. The Brink of Darkness picks up where book one left off and I love that a majority of this story takes place in the lowlands. The lowlands, imagine hell, is where X had spent his entire life. He was born there and held there with all the damned. Being different as he was, he was never truly liked except by a select few. When he broke lowland’s laws by having a relationship with Zoe things went from bad to worse for X. Despite the change in circumstances for X, he did not lose hope. In fact, while in isolation he concocted a plan that he was sure was going to end in a reversal of his situation. He would find the one who started it all, he would find the woman who dared give birth to him despite it being forbidden.Meanwhile, Zoe was on Earth struggling with the absence of X and dealing with the aftermath of what took place before he was dragged to the lowlands. Zoe found herself withdrawing from those who love her, partly because her heart was breaking but also because she did not know how to tell her friends the truth, would they even believe her? Despite all that had occurred, the losses that she felt, and the truths that she learned, Zoe was willing to throw it all away on a wild gamble to help X in the lowlands and possibly free him from the never-ending hell that he endured.I loved the setting of The Brink of Darkness! The description of the lowlands and the occurrences that took place there was freaky, chilling, and horrifying. I felt for X from beginning to end. I was disappointed in Zoe’s character a bit. After everything that she learned and endured from book one I felt that she should have been more serious but she was annoying at times with her angst. She just felt very juvenile to me in this story. I did appreciate the lengths that she went to for X though. There were many plot threads that were interesting and followed to conclusion but I was disappointed that a few were not and I was left wondering what happened. Also, the ending felt very rushed or glossed over to me, reveals were made, the villain dealt with and then everyone moved on to the next adventure. It was a nicely written book with a great plot but I just wished for a deeper feel from this story. This review is based on a complimentary book I received from NetGalley. It is an honest and voluntary review. The complimentary receipt of it in no way affected my review or rating.
