    Foreword

Wisdom is a virtue that only can be gained through experience. It is not innate. Anyone who is willing to engage with people, try something new, and reflect on the experience is able to acquire wisdom. If you really want to know the source of this information, I will give you the following glimpse: I am naturally pensive and always have pondered life. During my extensive travels around the world, I have enjoyed invaluable encounters with wise people of all ages and backgrounds, come across many inspiring books, and experienced many professional and personal highs and lows. All these experiences, combined with thousands of hours of reflection, have helped me take myself less seriously, increased my energy level, brought me tremendous joy, and helped the individuals with whom I’ve shared this wisdom.

This Pocket Wisdom consists of fifty-two treasures of wisdom—one per week for one year. However, since they are not listed in a meaningful sequence, you can read them in whatever order you want. These treasures of wisdom are divided into the following chapters: Key Themes (Love, Balance, Body, Energy, Emotions, Passion, Reflection, Purpose, Forgiveness, Joy, Presence, and Awareness), Overcoming Pain, Self-Reflection, Various, Exercises, and Summary.

I strongly believe that the truths and tools that I have assembled will provide you with valuable insights and many happy moments, and that you will experience a joy stemming from your personal development. Enjoy the journey.

    Chapter 1

    1. Key Themes

    1. LOVE: What Is Love?

Almost everybody dreams of romantic love at first sight—of the famous butterflies and the great fireworks. Great love seems to be a book with seven seals. How many films and books on the subject of love are out there? Why isn’t there a recipe?

Oftentimes, the focus lies on what can be called explosive fire—highly intense feelings which supposedly announce great love. But the name reveals what happens already—the fire explodes and it usually burns out shortly after. What remains is sound and smoke. As soon as the normal state is regained, you see the other person with different eyes. The praises diminish.

The solid fire, on the other hand, takes time. If the right conditions are provided, it can evolve. Once ignited and blazing, it burns solid and long—probably very long. The same holds true for solid love. But a foundation must be given—a common denominator, a shared sense of well-being together, and affection. In this state, you don’t feel displaced or crazy and consequently can remain yourself. You must give such a situation a chance and nurture the good feelings, trust, and affection—they may be the signs of the beginning of love. Contrary to the message conveyed by many romantic films, a deep solid love can emerge much more often than one would expect. This solid love is just as beautiful as explosive love, but it contains less dynamite and will most certainly exist for a long time—if not permanently. In some cases, this development can take place with an explosive fire that turns solid with time. In any case, it takes a lot to extinguish solid fire. The key ingredients are patience (especially at the beginning) and constant care. But who wouldn’t want to take care of a beautiful fire or a great love?

    2. BALANCE: Are You Still Looking for Balance?

Everything has two sides: feelings, shapes, colors, characters, lusts, etc. These two parts bring harmony as a whole. We cannot look at only one side, because it is incomplete and not perfect. It is only when one looks at the whole, that one can find peace and harmony in it.

Nature can be called a dual system because it is based on so-called antagonists. These are complementary or contradictory opposites. The same principle applies to human body sides:

Left side: controlled from the right brain (holistic perception), feelings, female, yin energy (intuition, emotion, creativity, self-development), relation to the past

Right side: controlled from the left brain (logical, rational, time-bound), physical, male, yang energy (logic, control, fear, mind, material), relation to present and future

For left-handers it is the other way around—the left side stands for the present and the future and the right side for the past.

Every person needs balance, but often it is absent from today’s meritocracy. Most activities are related to the yang energy. while the yin energy is often missing or underdeveloped. The neglect of yin is one of the main causes of suffering, disease, and disorders. Often, for example, no strength can be drawn from work—it stands in the way of fulfillment and joy because that energy delivery and execution take place via the yang energy. Conversely, inspiration and inner perception are related to the yin energy. It is about receptivity which marks the beginning of every action. Thus, with increased openness, more energy can be absorbed.

Qualities fostering the yin and the yang energy:

How do you balance too much yang energy with yin energy? If someone
